"Too late if I'm not." She grinned. "I already showed him."
"You showed Ry?"
"Actually, I modeled it for him."
"You bought it?"
Nodding, Maz said, "Yep. Wait 'til you see it. It's perfect."
"I thought we were going shopping next week?" She had been looking forward to it. She rarely made the drive to San Francisco and even though she'd been forced to go every month since February, she wasn't counting those trips. They were definitely not fun.
"We're still going. You need a dress and I want to check out a couple of maternity shops." Maz plucked at the front of her top. "You rightly pointed out I'm getting a little too big for my regular clothes."
"I can't get over how big your boobs have gotten. It's like you're five months pregnant instead of five weeks."
"I know!" Maz glanced toward Ry. "Have to admit Ry isn't the only one who likes them. Although I'm sure I'll be cursing them later when I've got cracked and leaky nipples," she said with a laugh.
The man behind them in the line gasped and Alyssa smiled at him in apology. "Shh…" she said to Maz. "Save the TMI pregnant body transformations for somewhere less public."
Maz grinned. "I'm going to be one of those over sharing moms-to-be."
She couldn't restrain her smile. Maz had always been a little cautious, a bit withdrawn; it hadn't only been Alyssa's reluctance to let people close that had kept their friendship superficial. But watching her friend now, hell, since she'd moved to Sunnyville, she could see the new life Maz had sought when she left LA agreed with her.
Then again, maybe Ry was responsible for the joy radiating off her friend.
"What would you ladies like?" the girl behind the counter asked.
"Two waters and slice of toast please."
Alyssa looked at Maz, one eyebrow arched.
"I'm cutting out caffeine." She patted her non-existent belly. "It's not good for the baby."
She could see Maz wasn't only going to be an oversharing mom-to-be, she was going to be one of those by the book, don't do anything thatmighthave an effect on her unborn child kind. "Ever wonder how the human race survived without modern medicine telling us what we should and shouldn't do when pregnant?" she asked.
"I know. And if I'm honest, giving up caffeine is more about morning sickness than anything else, which is where the toast comes in," Maz explained as she swiped her card. "I can't stomach it. But, God. I miss it!"
"I can only imagine." She thought about how much coffee she'd been consuming in recent weeks. "You know I've probably been drinking your share lately."
"That can't be good."
"No."
Alyssa moved aside when a woman reached past her for the coffee the barista placed on the counter. Maz leaned closer. Breathed deep.
Laughing, Alyssa said, "You are totally sniffing people."
"It's not the people," Maz sighed. "It's the coffee."
"Huh?"
"I swear, I can't drink it without it reappearing but I'm one hundred percent addicted to the smell. I make Ry his coffee every morning just so I can sniff it."
"Speaking of Ry. You head over, I'll grab our drinks and your toast, meet you at the table."
"Okay."
With Maz no longer beside her, she had time to think about how to handle Jack being here. Instead of giving him the cold shoulder she'd offered him for the last two weeks, she'd behave as though he hadn't revealed his secret identity and astronomical bank account balance. She’d treat him like she always had. Except that had been a roller coaster of epic ups and downs recently.
