Sighing, Maryn indicated she should step into the elevator when the doors opened. "Okay. Yeah. I thought he might keep that piece of information from you until you were here."
"Great. So, I can expect to see my sutured face splashed across some society pages?"
"Probably."
"Is that why you suggested I leave my hair down?"
"No. That style works better with your dress, but it does help camouflage your wound."
"I suppose we have some kind of cover story for my injuries?"
"Yes. Although I haven't spoken to Jack, or Dash, so I can't tell you what it is."
"It would be nice to go in prepared," she grumbled.
Maryn laughed. "They'll meet us when the doors open. No doubt the guys have told Jack you're here by now."
"I thought they didn't want to tell him?"
"Not until you were minutes away. Roark is monitoring our movements."
"So, he knew the second we left the room?"
Maryn nodded. "I wouldn't be surprised if he's patched into the hotel security." She indicated the camera in the ceiling. "And I don't want to know how he gained access."
Alyssa laughed. "No wonder Penny is enamored with him. They're two peas in a pod."
"Definitely."
"I don't know if that's a good thing or not."
Maryn turned to face her. "Roark is one of the best men I know. Penny can't go wrong emulating him."
She was unable to reply because the doors swished open and she found herself wrapped up in a tight hug. Face pressed to a hard chest, Alyssa breathed deep and every part of her relaxed.
Jack.
"Jesus, Jack, let the woman breathe already." Alyssa felt Maryn's small hands attempting to break them apart.
"She's breathing," Jack said into the top of her head. "Give us five."
"Dammit, Jack."
She thought the curse came from Keaton but couldn't be sure because the doors closed shutting everyone out before she could look, and Jack hit the button for the top floor without letting her go.
"Where are we going?" she asked his chest.
"Up. Then down."
"Okay." She'd be happy to go up and stay but she knew he had to go to his company's annual charity ball. As CEO and Chairman of the board for the Townsend Group, it was his responsibility to attend. She would do her best to stand beside him and hope she didn't let him down in any way.
"A few minutes should be enough to get me through the next hour, then we'll find somewhere else to take a moment so I can get through the hour after that."
"Jack." His name left her lips on a sigh.
"I'm struggling here. I don't know whether to be pissed that you ignored my instructions or happy you're in my arms."
"Go with happy. There's been enough pissed in my day already."
