Sam

Ithink I fucked up.

As I watch the fiery omega retreat from the building, my heart sinks.

I kissed Jo. And it was…the best damn kiss of my life.

Before I fully realize what I’m doing, I’m leaving the building, keeping to the shadows as I maneuver along the sides of the courtyard. Jo is back on her blanket, her head on Hayden’s shoulder, and I don’t let my eyes linger too long before I’m entering the medical building. I take the back hallway that leads to accommodations for staff, and knock on West’s door.

“One second!” he calls out, and when he opens the door, he barely looks surprised to see me. He’s in a t-shirt and sweatpants, and he wordlessly steps aside to let me into his apartment. It’s way bigger and nicer than the studio accommodations that orderlies get, so if we ever do hang out, it’s always here.

“I thought you were working the movie night tonight.” He yawns, covering his mouth. “To keep an eye on Jo.”

“Oh, I kept an eye on her alright,” I say in frustration, running a hand across my jaw.

“Woah.” West raises a brow at me as he closes his door. I continue to pace his living room like a madman. “Explain.”

“I got assigned to be the bathroom escort,” I roll my eyes and huff, “and of courseshehad to go. We kind of got into it when we were walking back, about why she wouldn't tell us who was threatening her. She ended up telling me that the asshole barked at her, telling her not to tell anyone they spoke.”

West’s eyes flash dangerously. “Motherfucker. Did you lift it?”

I nod. “Of course. But then…she told me it was more complicated than that, and I deduced that…well, apparently alpha commands don’t work on her.”

West’s brows shoot up with an impressed look. Yeah, I was impressed too. It takes a massive amount of dedication and training for omegas to resist alpha commands, and honestly I’ve never seen an omega who it didn’t affect even just a little bit.

“Then I kissed her—”

“Dude.” West’s jaw drops. “What the fuck?”

“I don’t know what happened!” I nearly shout, my hands threading through my hair. “One minute she's telling me she meant to end up here, and the next, I’m kissing her like some kind of newly emerged alpha unable to keep his damn instincts in check!”

“Shit, Sam.” He shakes his head at me, and shame unfurls in my gut. I should be able to keep better control of myself.

“That’s not all. She’s pissed. Angry. Hurt.”

“Because you kissed her?” He sounds surprised.

“No…” I shake my head and take a deep breath. “After…like, right after, I asked her who she was working for. It was like a switch was flipped. She laughed, and asked if this was my first time seducing someone for information.”

“You idiot.” He punches my arm, and I frown, rubbing at the spot.

“What?” I snap, irritated that everyone is getting mad at me tonight.

West looks at me like I’m stupid. “She probably thinks you work for Brooks now or something. I bet you anything she’s convinced that you’ve faked every spark between the two of you.”

“What does that matter?” I huff, crossing my arms.

“Well, for one thing, she won’t trust you now. Neither of us, probably, since she knows we’re close.”

Fuck.

“Plus…dammit, Sam.” He shakes his head. “I’m ninety percent sure we’re all supposed to be in a pack together.”

Fucking fuckity fuck.

“What do you mean?” I demand, rounding on him. “Why didn’t you say anything sooner?”

“What would you have said if I had told you that I thought you, me, Hayden Pierce, and Kole Vasiliev all belonged to her?”
