Paige’s eyes, now that I’m looking, are red, and her pupils are blown. Is sheonsomething?

The beta continually tries to go after Jo, who keeps on avoiding her, letting Paige tire herself out.

“What is happening right now?” Sam’s voice startles me, and I glance over at him as he sidles up next to us. “I’ve never seen Paige enter the fights.”

“Do you see her eyes?” I ask, pushing aside my current disdain for the orderly. Jo told us what happened, kind of, but I don’t think Sam is that malicious as to make her fall for him so he can get information. “And don’t let our omega catch you talking about Paige like you notice her in the slightest.”

Sam only gives me an incredulous look, making me smirk. “Ouromega? What—”

“Shit,” Hayden mutters, his eyes tracking the women in the ring as Paige continually goes after Jo like a wild animal. “She looks high.”

“Something is definitely wrong here.” Sam looks…worried.

Finally, Jo stops toying with Paige and lands a solid hit to her face, making the beta crumple to the ground. She doesn’t move, but the airhorn doesn’t sound, so Jo has no choice but to keep going. The doctors nearby immediately start whispering wildly to each other, making me suspicious as hell.

Jo gets two more half-hearted hits in on the beta before the airhorn goes off. She backs off immediately, a conflicted look on her face. She must have noticed that Paige didn’t seem all there either.

Jo may hate the bitch, but she’s not heartless, and would feel bad about beating on someone who wasn’t at full capacity. Well, except if they’re abusive asshole alphas. She has no problem beating on them then.

Orderlies immediately enter the ring to retrieve Paige, then they send the next contender in. Another beta.

Jo takes care of this one just as quickly as the last, but as they keep coming, she’s getting more tired, and they’re getting more aggressive.

Regardless, she’s putting them all on their asses since it’s obvious none of them have any formal training and are thinking they can take her just because she is a small omega.

I don’t knowwhotrainedLisichka, but I will need to thank him when all of this is over.

She chokes out one final beta before the airhorn blows, and Brooks stands, an enraged Whitmore at his side. “This will be the last fight!”

A large figure enters the ring. An alpha.

A low growl rumbles in the back of Hayden’s throat. I give him a look to remind him that Sam isright fucking there, but the alpha in question is also pissed.

“They aren’t giving her any recovery time,” Sam mutters, clenching his fists. He’s right. Even whenIfight they give me a one minute break to get water.

“I know she can handle herself,” Hayden chokes out. “But this is…more difficult than I thought.” He doesn’t say too much because again, Sam isright fucking there, but it’s obvious his instincts are riding him hard.

Mine are too. I don’t even have my claiming mark on her yet and I want to enter the ring and rip the alpha’s spine out for looking at my mate.

The airhorn goes off, and then all hell breaks loose.

thirty-six

Jo

Fuck, I’m exhausted. This is my…what? Fifth fight? Even though none of them were a real challenge, I’ve still been exerting myself, and they haven’t allowed me a single break for water or anything.

I’m sweating, my body starting to feel the weight of the energy I’ve expended over the last thirty minutes.

The hit that lands on my jaw has the coppery tang of blood filling my mouth and black spots dotting my vision.

Damn, he just came right out the gate with that, didn’t he?

There’s something wild about his eyes, almost the same as Paige’s were, plus the last three betas they’ve sent in with me. None of them were finessed or skilled in their grappling, they relied on their strength.

But none of them hit like this alpha.

The crowd jeers, and I don’t dare look at my guys. Instead, I spit out a mouthful of blood and give the alpha what I’m sure is a very bloody smile. “That all you got, Sweet Pea? My daddy hit me harder than that when I was still a teen.”
