“Good. Then I’m going to continue to do it.”
Auggie looked at him for a long moment, before nodding. “Okay.”
Thor’s heart clenched, happiness ripping through him. He knew that okay meant a whole lot.
He continued to feed his boy, nibbling a bit here and there himself, though he’d eaten while he was preparing the tray, not able to resist making himself a quick bacon sandwich while he boiled the egg.
When the tray was empty, he set it on the floor and tugged Auggie to lie snuggled up against him.
“Thank you for breakfast.”
“You’re very welcome. I’m going to feed you a lot. Make sure you aren’t skipping meals.”
“I don’t do it on purpose,” Auggie protested. “Time just gets away from me sometimes. Or all I have is ramen and I don’t feel like making another meal of it.”
“All the more reason for me to make sure you have regular meals. That you enjoy.”
Auggie shook his head, fingers playing with the edge of the blankets. “You seem too good to be true.”
“Maybe that’s just because you’ve never had the chance to have what you truly need before.”
“And you’re what I truly need?”
“I believe I am.” What would Auggie think of that?
“Just like you believe I’m beautiful.”
“Just like that.”
“Maybe you can believe it all enough for both of us?” Auggie suggested, meeting his eyes.
He could see the worry there, the vulnerability. He knew Auggie was opening himself up like he never did, like he’d learned not to in order to keep himself safe.
It was the best gift Auggie could have given him. “I can,” he promised.
“I might not ever change.”
“I know.” He just wanted to love and take care of Auggie. To be his boy’s safe space to live his best life in.
“I’m scared.”
“What are you scared of?”
“Not being good enough. I’m not being mean to myself, I swear. You’re just so wonderful and the things you say are so tempting. It’s like you want to give me everything. What do you get out of it?”
“You.” It really was as simple, and as complicated, as that.
Auggie sighed but leaned harder against him, arms wrapping around him in a hug. He kissed the top of Auggie head.
“We can take things day by day. I’m not going anywhere,” he said.
“I don’t want to go anywhere, either.”
“I’m glad to hear that.”
“Yeah?”
“Yes. It would make me sad to never be able to see you again.”
