I read it out loud for Juniper’s benefit, then watched on with unease as the words reformed into a language I couldn’t understand. I gestured for Juniper to read it, assuming it was for her like the first one was for me.

This time, she didn’t read it out loud. Instead, all colour drained from her face as the words finally dissipated, and she swayed where she stood. I caught her, tucking her safely into my side to support her weight while she muttered something about a curse under her breath. She seemed spooked as she settled her gaze back on me.
‘What curse?’ I asked her, confused why that would cultivate such a reaction from her.
Her head snapped up, and she eyed me warily, her teeth clacking as her mouth closed, instantly cutting off her muttering. She said nothing, but a thin line of blood trickled from her nose.
