I couldn’t wait to see her face when she walked in and realised she hadn’t just lost her husband.

To find that her own daughter had replaced her.

She was obsolete—a has-been.

No job. No house. No money.

A destitute little tramp.

I absently circled my fingers on Silas’s chest. His plan was perfect. I wanted her to see what an animal he really was with me. We’d give Animal Planet a run for its money. I snickered quietly.

“What mischief are you up to?” Silas growled.

“I’m innocent,” I said sweetly, glancing up and batting my eyelashes.

He grunted but didn’t hide his smile.

“Innocent, my ass. You wore me out,” he muttered, even as his morning wood rose between us.

“I’m so sorry. How can I make it up to you?”

Any trace of sleep vanished from his face. His eyes lit up, sharp and wicked.

“Oh, I’ve got a very good idea,” he said, sitting up.

Two hours later, I waddled downstairs to the dining room and gingerly sat on the damn plug he’d insisted on.

It was not a very good idea.

We stared at the van as more parcels continued to pile up in the hallway.

“Do you think he overdid it?” I asked Connie.

“This is nothing compared to what she used to spend,” she muttered, shaking her head. “So much waste.”

Silas was catching up on some work, which gave me some free time.

“So, you and Silas,” Connie said, nudging me with her elbow.

“United by a common enemy,” I replied lightly.

“I’m gonna have my popcorn out tonight,” she chuckled.

“What are you two plotting?” Silas grumbled.

Startled, I turned to face him. His usually slicked-back hair was tousled, and his shirt hung open enough to reveal the top of his chest. His hands were stuffed into his trouser pockets. Even at home, he stuck to formalwear—and it suited him far too well.

“Just waiting for the parcels to stop,” Connie said dryly.

His eyes settled on me.

“You look hungry,” he murmured.

“She just ate lunch,” Connie said, almost affronted—then paused as she realised what he meant. “Oh… I’m too old for this.”

She walked past Silas, muttering and shaking her head.
