“It was more of a misunderstanding.”

“So you’ve worked it all out?” Mom asked.

I nodded.

We hadn’t entirely worked things out before they interrupted us, but enough to give me hope that everything was going to be fine.

“So, Clay, is it?”

“Yes ma’am,” he replied.

“Are you from Collier?”

“Yes ma’am. Born and raised.”

“Your family’s here as well?”

I had never once even thought to ask about his family. It had never come up.

“They were. My parents were true mates. Dad died in a stampede out on the range a few years back. Mom followed him into the next life.”

“Oh, I’m so sorry to hear that. Do you have any siblings?”

“No ma’am. I’m an only child. I have friends that are like family though.”

I could see my mother softening towards my mate, and it gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling. Just maybe I wouldn’t have to lose my parents. We could find a way to make this work and visit them from time to time.

“You’re not coming back with us then, are you?” Dad asked.

I sighed. “No, but I’m so happy to see you both.”

I hugged them again just as I felt the tension in the air sizzle and shift once more.

“Let’s go!” Dane barked from the door, glaring at Clay.

“You brought Dane with you? Why?” I asked.

“We didn’t know what we’d be walking into. Of course we brought him,” Dad confessed.

“But Dad, we’re in Collier territory. I don’t think the Alpha is going to take too kindly to another Alpha invading his space.”

“I won’t be here long enough for it to become a problem,” Dane said. “Now get your things Winnie and let’s get out of here.”

Clay let out a low guttural growl of warning.

Dane ignored him.

“Winnie, now,” he said again.

I gasped and my eyes widened as I felt his Alpha power flow over me.

Not sure what to do, I just froze as if my feet were somehow glued to the floor.

“Dane, you need to leave,” I begged feeling my knees starting to buckle.

Clay took a step closer placing himself as a shield between me and my Alpha.

My mouth went dry as I feared for my mate’s life.
