“Hello?”

I didn’t say anything, but when she started to call someone, I finally spoke up.

“Ruby, I’m here and I’m fine.”

“Winnie?”

She walked hesitantly inside looking around and then ran to my side to throw her arms around me.

“What happened?”

I sniffed but couldn’t seem to find the words.

“Where’s Clay?”

I sobbed at the mention of his name.

“He’s gone. He left.”

“What happened to the front door?”

I wailed.

“Clay.”

“What?” she asked dead serious. She looked me over and the picked up her phone again and dialed a number. “I’m at Clay’s, get over here right now.”

I had no idea who she was calling and quite frankly I didn’t care.

“Ruby, I’m fine. Please just leave me alone.”

“I will not. This is all my fault.”

“What are you talking about?”

“I told you to go after what you wanted. I had no idea he was going to reject you on principle.”

“I don’t even know what that means.”

“You begged him to mark you and he refused. I can’t imagine how badly that must have hurt you, but he had good intentions.”

I snorted. “How is that good intentions, Ruby? He doesn’t want me.”

“He wants you more than he’s ever wanted anything in his entire life, Winnie.”

“He told you that?”

“Yeah. He didn’t want to claim you while you were intoxicated. Apparently, you were drunker than we thought, but then I don’t think any of us had any business giving advice in our conditions either. I am truly sorry. We hyped you up and didn’t even think about Clay and his moral compass.”

I was so confused. I didn’t know what to think anymore.

Another car rolled up to the house capturing my attention.

I didn’t say anything as a door shut. Heavy footsteps approached but I knew with certainty they weren’t Clays.

“What the hell happened here?” Thomas Collier cursed as he entered the house.

My face turned all shades of red at once.
