The way he was watching me told me there was something dangerous about this guy, but instead of warning me off, it sent a thrill of excitement right down my spine.
What was wrong with me?
He looked at me like a man looks at a woman, or perhaps like a wolf stares down his prey.
I gulped hard.
“Look mister. Thanks for trying to save me and all, but really, I’ve got this.”
As I turned to walk away, my wolf surprised me as she whined in protest. It gave me cause to stop in my tracks a second.
Weird. She’d never communicated quite like that before. It was almost as if I could hear her more than just feel her.
Mine,I clearly heard.
I looked around but couldn’t figure where it was coming from.
The man continued to watch me.
I couldn’t help myself. As I started to walk away from him once more, I shook my ass a little more than was necessary and bit back a grin.
He followed me.
I wasn’t sure how I knew it without turning around to prove myself right. I just knew. Maybe it was a wolf sense or something. I hadn’t spent enough time with my wolf to really know for sure. It was one of the things I was most looking forward to on this new adventure I was embarking on.
I heard the crowd’s thunderous roar and knew that the rodeo was wrapping up. I would have loved to have seen my parents perform one last time, but if I was going to get away, now was the best time to do it.
I started to pick up my pace as panic set in.
Someone called my name as I rounded the corner alongside the carnival. I ignored it and kept walking all the way to the corner of the street.
A deep feeling of defeat was starting to set in.
Where the hell was I going to go?
All the hotels within walking distance would be full. I hadn’t considered that. As I looked to the right and then to the left trying to decide which way to go, I realized that I hadn’t considered a lot of things.
“Winnie!” I heard Dane’s voice boom out from across the field.
“Winnie!” someone else yelled.
I pulled a hat from my bag and placed it on my head. I was still in my show clothes. With Rendall showing up in my stable and then that guy that tried to rescue me, I hadn’t had time to change like I’d planned.
“Gah! I stick out like a sore thumb,” I grumbled.
An arm wrapped around me, and I jumped, but my whole body shivered and seemed to relax at the same time.
“Just tell me one thing. Are you trying to get away from them or me?”
It was the handsome hero that had been following me.
I heard my name again off in the distance.
“Them,” I said breathlessly.
He smiled and kept his arm around me as he led me across the street and into the hotel. Without stopping at the lobby, we walked right to the elevator and then took it to the second floor where he escorted me into a room.
I froze against the door as it shut behind me.
