When it landed on the ground with a thud I froze and listened. There was still talking and laughing down the hall.
Deciding to go head first would not be my best bet, I moved a chair over and then used it to help balance myself as I backed my ass right out that window.
As I dropped to the ground, I heard a snicker.
“Now that was impressive.”
I whipped around to find a woman with short blonde hair and pink stripes standing there with a baby in her arms and a toddler hugging her leg.
“Uh, hey,” I said, trying to act casual like this was perfectly normal.
She scowled as she looked me over.
“You damn well better be Winnie and just getting cold feet.”
“Excuse me?”
“Clay’s never been big on dating. He’s a closet hopeless romantic. Chances of a mistress sneaking out his bedroom window isn’t exactly high. Know what I’m saying?”
I growled just at the thought of him having another woman in his room.
She smirked. “That’s what I thought. So why are you running Winnie?”
“You wouldn’t understand,” I admitted.
She laughed. “Try me, because I didn’t exactly handle my own mating well. If you’re going to run, at least have the decency to tell him to his face. He deserves that much. Clay’s a great guy and I don’t want to see you hurt him.”
My shoulders sagged. I didn’t want to hurt him.
“I didn’t realize where he was bringing me. It’s not safe for me here. I have to get away.”
She frowned. “What’s wrong with this place? I mean I get it’s a bit of a bachelor pad, but at least he keeps it clean and takes care of it. I’m sure he won’t mind if you make it a little more feminine. And there is no way Clay would ever hurt you, not intentionally at least.”
“No, not that. I’m in Pack territory. Collier Pack territory. It’s dangerous.”
She looked around, obviously seeing no threats.
“Did someone do something or say something to you? Because I will personally handle it if they did.”
“No. You don’t get it. Large Packs are very territorial. It’s not safe. Everyone knows that.”
“Everyone who?” she demanded.
“Just, everyone.”
“Look, I have no idea what you’re talking about, but no one is going to hurt you here. You’re perfectly safe.”
“Sure, any outsider is just welcomed with open arms. I’m trespassing here. Don’t you get it?”
She sighed. “I thought you already met Thomas.”
“I did.”
“Did he tell you to leave?”
“No.”
“Did he give you any reason that you shouldn’t be in his territory?”
