“Your girls?”
I grinned and nodded.
“Clay!” Opal screeched as she jumped down from the fence and ran to us, leaping into my arms trusting I would catch her. She hugged me tight around the neck. “I missed you.”
“Missed you too, little lady.”
“Who’s that?” she whispered, pointing to Winnie.
“This is Winnie. Winnie, aside from the cows, this is the other woman in my life. This is Opal.”
Winnie
Chapter 10
I just stared at him holding the little girl in his arms.
Opal leaned in and cupped her hands around his ear.
“She’s really pretty. Like a real cowgirl.”
Clay followed her lead cupping his hand at her ear.
“She is a real cowgirl.”
“Really?”
He nodded and I couldn’t help but grin as my heart melted just a little seeing this sweet, softer side of my mate.
I’d gotten glimpses of it in the short time I’d known him, but not like this.
He cleared his throat. “So, did my newest ladies arrive?”
“Yes!” Opal cheered. “They’re beautiful.”
“Not as beautiful as you.” He kissed her cheek and set her back down to run ahead and lead the way.
The couple that was with her were watching us with open curiosity.
Clay tipped his hat to the woman with wild red hair.
“Ruby.”
“Clay. You’re home early and looks like you brought more than just the cows home.”
He chuckled. “She doesn’t sugarcoat anything, ever. Winnie, this is Ruby. Ruby, my mate.”
“Oh,” she said surprised as she looked me over even more curiously now. “Your true mate?”
“Would I bother with any other?”
“And you’re not fighting it?”
“Why would I? You know I’ve been waiting for her.”
She snorted. “Yeah, like Lily was waiting for Thomas?”
He grinned. “Thank God she’s not a Lily.”
