I followed his arm just in time to see a shooting star.

“Wait, was that what I think it was.”

“A shooting star. There’s another,” he said moving his arm to the right just a little.

“I see another,” I told him pointing in a different direction.

“Wow. I guess there’s a meteor shower tonight. I didn’t realize.”

“It’s beautiful.”

“They say you can make a wish on a shooting star,” he whispered closing his eyes for a second while I watched him. He opened his eyes again in to catch me staring. “Did you make a wish?”

“No. I already have everything I need in life. I have you.”

My heart was full, and I meant every word. Clay was the best man and everything I didn’t know I needed or wanted in life.

“Mine,” I told him.

“Always,” he whispered back with a smile.

I lowered my head until our lips met, and I kissed him softly, pouring everything I was feeling into it.

“Thank you for taking me running tonight. It was better than I even imagined it would be.”

“You’re welcome. And you’re free to run here anytime, sweetheart.”

Chills ran down my arms at the endearment I was growing to love.

He frowned. “You’re cold.”

I wasn’t cold in the least, but before I could say so, Clay was rising and taking me with him. He put out the fire and just held me for a moment as we stared up at the stars a few minutes longer.

“We should head home. It’s getting late and we still need to grab some dinner.”

“Okay,” I said, not really wanting to leave the magic of this place.

“We’ll come again soon.”

I wondered if just maybe he could read my thoughts. I knew it was possible in time, but I had heard it took years, maybe even decades for a bond to strengthen enough for that.

Clay shifted first and I followed his lead.

There was no more time for talking as we ran once more.

I knew with certainty that this was going to be a night I’d never forget.

Chapter 15

Running with Winnie felt like it brought us even closer. A part of me wished I had just gone for it and claimed her right there under the stars, but I had been so mesmerized watching her take the reins that I didn’t take advantage of the opportunity.

When the time came, I hoped it would be as perfect as last night had been.

The fact that my evening routine had been all screwed up hadn’t bothered me in the least. I wouldn’t trade that time with her for anything.

“Hey, wake up. We’re late,” Winnie said as she came out the bathroom after her shower.
