I pouted and then made a dramatic show of exasperation.
“Should have known I’d be saddled with a responsible one.”
She rolled her eyes and then grabbed a pillow and smacked me with it.
“Get moving.”
I grabbed her and pulled her down on top of me kissing her as she giggled.
In truth, I had never taken a day off in my entire life.
As if to remind me of that, my phone rang. I glanced down and saw it was Thomas.
“What?” I said as I answered.
“Where the hell are you? It’s six twenty already.”
“I’m at home in bed.”
“Are you dying?”
“No, asshole, I’m not dying.”
“Oh, shit, am I disturbing some Winnie time?”
I cursed under my breath.
“Damn, sorry man.”
“You aren’t disturbing anything. She’s harassing me to leave, worried she’ll be late.”
“Yeah, I heard she was working over at the stables. Dalton seems thrilled with her. Better watch your back. He may be old, but I suspect he’s still got moves.”
I growled at the thought.
Thomas laughed in my ear.
“You really are an asshole.”
“Seriously though. Are you okay? This isn’t like you.”
I sighed. “I’m fine. Getting up and getting dressed now. I’ll be there in about fifteen minutes,” I conceded. “Did you need something?”
I hated that the one time I decided to be spontaneous and take my time getting into work, someone noticed. And not just anyone, but my Alpha.
Sure, we joked around as friends and all, but I still respected his position in the Pack, and I was proud of him too. His father had left big shoes to fill, and Thomas had stepped up and more than exceeded everyone’s expectations.
“There’s no rush. I was just surprised you weren’t already in this morning.”
“Oh. Yeah, sorry about that.”
“Clay, you work harder than just about anyone I know. You have nothing to apologize for. I mean what time does your day actually begin?”
“I don’t know. Eight, I think.”
“Yeah, so don’t sweat this. I was just checking in on you. Hey, why don’t you drop Winnie off and head to Kate’s. I’ll meet you there.”
“Are you sure everything’s okay?” I asked, unable to remember the last time Thomas and I had purposefully met for a meal. Normally if we had breakfast at Kate’s together it was because we both happened to be there at the same time, total coincidence, not planned.
