“I’m a little scared,” I whispered.
I wasn’t used to ever showing vulnerability. I couldn’t afford too, but with Clay, everything was different.
“If you don’t want to go, you don’t have to. I think if you give it a chance, you could actually have a good time, but if you aren’t comfortable, no one is forcing you to do this tonight.”
I scoffed. “Pretty sure Lily did not give me a choice about this.”
“I can handle Lily. She means well, but she can be a bit much at times.”
“I don’t know anyone there.”
“That’s not true. Ruby will be there and so will Kate. You’ve met both of them before.”
“They will?”
“Guaranteed. But seriously, Win. If you want to stay home tonight instead, it’s okay. I’ll never turn down an evening with my girl.”
I loved the way he called me his. It made me feel as if I truly belonged here with him.
I hugged him tighter and then kissed his cheek.
“I’m going to do this,” I finally said with new determination.
I unwrapped myself from his arms, washed my face, and then carefully applied just a little bit of mascara and a dab of lipstick.
I bit my lip as I turned towards my mate.
“Is this okay?” I asked.
His smile widened. “Do you feel comfortable in your own skin?”
I nodded.
“Then it’s perfect. You look gorgeous.”
“Thanks,” I mumbled just as the doorbell rang.
I took a deep breath.
“That’s probably Lily.”
“Take your time. I’ll get it.”
I shook my head. “No, I’m ready and need to go before I chicken out.”
He chuckled. “My girl faces down wild horses but gets scared of a few potential friends.”
I scowled and smacked him.
“What? I’m just saying. It’s cute.”
“Don’t tell anyone, okay?” I whispered as I opened the door.
I shrieked as Clay grabbed me from behind and swung me around to face him. He looked so serious as he caressed my cheek.
“Your secrets will always be safe with me,” he whispered before kissing me like a starving man.
Lily groaned. “It’s one night, Clay. Stop groping your mate and give her to me.”
