“What’s up Ruby?”

“There seems to be something wrong with one of the girls. She shouldn’t be ready to deliver for another month, but she’s in distress and is acting like she’s starting to labor.”

“Shit! Is it one of the new ones?”

“Yup.”

“I’m on my way.”

“No, I can handle it, take care of your mate.”

“It’s fine. I’ll leave her a note in case she wakes up before I get back.”

I hung up the phone and found a piece of paper. I jotted down a note and left it on the kitchen table, hoping Winnie slept through until I returned.

Chapter 20

I stirred at the sound of the front door.

It took me a minute to realize I was still in my fur.

My head was still in a bit of a fog, but at least it was no longer pounding.

I shifted back to my skin.

“Clay? What time is it?” I asked.

Slowly, I opened my eyes and realized he wasn’t in bed next to me.

I got up and walked out into the living room, but he wasn’t there either.

Frowning I checked the bathroom before returning to the living room. It was an open concept. I walked over to the side of the room which was the kitchen.

Coffee was made and still hot, so I poured myself a glass and then retrieved a slice of cold pizza from the fridge. Biting into it was heavenly. I moaned in pleasure.

Why does cold pizza taste like the greatest thing I’ve ever eaten?

I didn’t care why, I just polished off the first slice and went for another.

That’s when I saw it, a piece of paper on the kitchen table. I went to check it out.

Sweet Winnie,

I’m sorry but got called in for an emergency. Hoping it won’t be long. I’ll call on my way home to see if you’re up and ready to eat. In the meantime, there’s pizza leftover in the fridge. Try it cold. Trust me, it helps too.

Clay

Everything about the evening came rushing back to me. I was mortified. Had I really begged him to claim me? What had I been thinking?

I wasn’t even sure I could face him again after that.

Sweet Winnie, my ass.

He lost any rights to endearments with me.

I remembered it all so clearly and it felt like a dagger being thrust into my heart.
