I turned in his arms and pulled him down to kiss me. I could feel the sharp points of his canines too as I grinned against his lips.
This was it.
My heart raced as he lifted me up into his arms.
My phone dinged again.
I paused for only a second, brushing away the seed of worry settling into the pit of my stomach.
When it chimed a third time, Micah set me down on my feet halfway to the bed.
I looked up at him in confusion.
“Something could be wrong. You have to check it.”
“But…” I started to protest even while running for my phone in relief.
It was back in the living room. If it wasn’t for our stupid accelerated hearing, I wouldn’t even have noticed it.
“Is everything okay?” Micah asked. I could feel his apprehension combining with mine as I opened my messages.
My shoulders slumped.
“No. Apparently the kids somehow snuck a big bag of candy and between the four of them they ate the whole bag. Vada puked twice already.”
Micah didn’t say a word as he walked back to the bedroom and returned only a few minutes later fully dressed in clean clothes and handing me a pair of sweatpants and a sweatshirt.
“Sorry, but you don’t have any clothes here yet. It’s the best I can offer.”
I looked at him through eyes filled with love.
“Shelby says she’s okay but just felt she had to say something. Should we finish this first?” I asked hesitantly, even knowing that for me, my concern over Vada trumped even something as important as mating this man.
“Luce, our baby is sick. She needs you. Get dressed. We can swing by the house if you want your own clothes, but we both know all we’re going to do is worry about her. We have our entire lives ahead of us. This is going to happen, just not tonight.”
“You’re sure?”
“Put the clothes on and come on. Of course, I’m sure.”
Feeling relieved, I slipped on the soft sweats he’d handed me, loving being covered in his scent.
He grabbed my hand, and we ran to the car like we were our way to an emergency.
“Did she say anything else? How many times has she thrown up?” he asked once we were sorted in his truck because his car was still back at my house.
“Twice. I’m sure she’s fine, just an upset stomach from too many sweets,” I tried to assure him as much as myself. “She’s never really been sick before.”
He reached over and squeezed my hand.
“Do you need to go home first?”
“No. I’d rather just get to her and see how she is for myself.”
“Thank God. I was hoping you’d say that.”
I grinned.
“Are you okay?” I asked him.
