He reached over and swiped it away with his thumb.

“What is it?”

“Nothing, I promise. Happy tears. I never dreamed I’d find you. You don’t know how lonely and scary life was before you came into it. I feel like I can finally breathe a little, like the weight of the world isn’t entirely on my shoulders anymore.”

He reached over and hugged me, kissing my forehead.

“I’ll happily shoulder it all for the both of you, always. You’ll never be alone again, Lucy.”

“Thank you for loving me, and for loving my daughter.”

“Our daughter,” he corrected. “I wasn’t joking about that.”

“I know. Our daughter.”

Before we got out of the car, Silas and Vada came running out of the house.

Micah’s wolf went on full alert as he jumped from the car.

“What’s wrong?” he demanded.

“Call just came in. Gotta run,” Silas yelled over his shoulder. “Don’t worry. She’s still alive.”

“She’s fine,” Vada assured me. “Already asleep and everything.”

“Wow, I’m impressed.”

“Come on,” Silas barked.

Vada hugged me. “It was a lot easier this time. I just might survive these twins after all.”

I smiled as I watched her jump into the car as they sped off.

“What would have happened if we hadn’t just come home?” I wondered aloud.

“He would have left her here to watch our girl while he ran off to do his duty.”

I considered that for a moment.

“I suppose it’s not much different than us in that regard, huh? I mean you could get called out for an emergency at any second without notice, too.”

“Yeah, I guess. I mean on call for anyone is like that in some regard I suppose.”

As if we had just summoned fate, his phone rang.

Micah stared down at it with a frown. “Let’s not talk about on call again anytime soon.”

I laughed as he answered it.

“You want me to what? Yeah, okay. Fine. I’ll be there in twenty. How long? Of course you don’t know,” he practically growled as he hung up the phone.

“What is it?”

“The mission Silas just got called out on, I’ve been summoned to go along.”

“Does that happen often?”

“No, but it does happen.”
