I shake my head. ‘I’m not smiling.’

‘Yes, you are.’

I shrug. ‘You’re doing this deliberately, aren’t you?’

‘What on earth do you mean?’

‘Exposing me to the most amazing chocolate cake I’ve everseen, just to test my willpower.’

‘You’d like some?’

‘Of course I would.’ I smile sadly. ‘You don’t think I likehaving to limit what I do and eat like this, do you? It’s torture.’ I shruguselessly. ‘But the migraines are even more painful.’

He nods thoughtfully, puts down the knife and sits downopposite. ‘How are the migraines?’

‘Horrible.’

‘No, I mean, are they still as bad as they were when youfirst had your accident?’

I frown, thinking about this. ‘Actually, no. Most of thetime now, if I take a tablet at the first warning sign, I can manage to avoid afull-blown attack.’

‘That’s good. So you’re becoming better at managing them. And maybe they’re decreasing in strength?’

‘Maybe. I hope so.’

‘Just a thought but instead of cutting out all “dangerous”foods, maybe you should experiment to see which really do affect you.’

‘Oh, I don’t know about that. It seems a bit reckless tome.’

He shrugs. ‘I can see that you’d be afraid. I think I wouldbe, too, in your situation. But do you think you might be going just a littleoverboard, eating such a restricted diet?’

I frown at him. ‘Well, I’m not frightened of food, if that’swhat you think,’ I say, crossing my arms.

He’s pushing all my buttons right now! Suggesting I’msome kind of weirdo because I won’t eat a piece of chocolate cake!

‘No?’

‘No!’

‘Really?’

‘No! And I’ll show you. Watch this.’ Feeling weirdly as if Ihave something to prove – to myself as much as Logan – I pick up the biggestslice of cake and take an enormous bite.

The flavours are amazing. Having been avoiding ‘bad’ triggerfoods, I haven’t eaten anything sweet for a long time and the sensation of therich chocolatey cake in my mouth is absolute heaven. I take another bite, instinctively closing my eyes to savour it.

‘Oh, my God, that’s utterly sublime.’ I open my eyes to findLogan sitting back, his arms folded, grinning at me.

I laugh, embarrassed. ‘See. Not scared.’

He nods. ‘I’m impressed. I notice you took the biggestslice.’

‘Of course.’

‘So are you going to finish it? Or shall I help you?’

‘Er... get your hands off! This is mine.’

He shrugs. ‘I’d be doing you a favour if I ate it myself.’Fast as lightning, he swipes it off my plate before I even know what’shappening. And when I protest, leaning over to get it back, he pulls it away.
