“Yep, he’s the owner.” I smile and nod in confirmation.

Amelia gets her balance and seems to walk okay, but I still hold on to her to be safe. I tell her more about Edgar on the way to the elevators. I leave out the juicy parts, but tell her enough for her to decide she’s throwing me a party for getting my cherry popped. Thankfully, it’ll just be the two of us.

When we get downstairs, Edgar rushes over to us as soon as the elevator opens.

Seeing him again makes my stomach flutter, and my heart beats faster.

“Amelia, this is Edgar.” I motion to him.

“Hi!” Amelia tries to be cheerful and gives me a nod of approval he obviously sees. “Nice to meet you,Edgar. I hear you had an interesting night with my best friend.”

“Is that so?” He gives me a glare but refocuses on Amelia. “How are you doing? Are you sure you feel well enough to leave?”

“Yeah, I’m ready to get the fuck out of here.” She says with a nod.

“There’s someone who wants to talk to you before you do.” Edgar steps to the side and I see the guy I have to assume is responsible for Amelia’s injuries, based on what he’s wearing.

“Is that him?” I look over at her.

“Yeah.” She grins. “That’s Big Tex. I guess I should at least let him know his driver didn’t kill me.”

I can’t help but eye the older man suspiciously as Amelia walks over.

“He seems like a decent guy.” Edgar shrugs. “It wasn’t intentional or anything.”

“He should still watch where he’s going. Or his driver should, whatever.” I do my best imitation of a growl, but it doesn’t sound very threatening. “Why is he here, anyway?”

“I think he just wanted to make sure she’s okay.” Edgar reaches down and takes my hand. “He said he’d pay her medical bills, too.”

“She’s got insurance.” I stare down the cowboy.

“And deductibles, I’m sure.” Edgar leans closer. “I think he likes her.”

“He doesn’t look like Amelia’s type.” I shake my head. “He’s old enough to be her dad.”

“Yeah, so am I.” He says with a bit of hesitation in his voice.

“I know.” I lean into his ear. “That’s why I enjoy calling youDaddy.”

“I hope that isn’t the only reason.” He growls.

“No.” I flash him a mischievous smile. “You’re not leaving until tomorrow, right?”

“I was planning on it, but I might stay an extra day.” He nudges me. “I’m not exactly eager to leave.”

“I wonder why that is?” I give him a nudge back.

“It’s a mystery.” He shrugs and kisses the top of my head. “Maybe I’m just scared to leave you alone. I couldn’t even leave you by yourself for a few minutes last night without you getting into trouble.”

“I’ll get into a lot more trouble if you stay.” I look down and grin.

“I’m counting on it.” He chuckles.

Amelia seems to be rather happy after talking with the cowboy, so we make our way to Edgar’s car. I don’t really want to leave Amelia until I’m sure she’s settled into her apartment and has everything she needs. Edgar offers to drop us off and pick me up later, which seems like the best option. If I hadn’t been so frazzled after finding out about Amelia, I would have driven, but it’s probably best that I didn’t. I step outside to call my grandmother and let her know what’s going on. She’s worried too, but I do a better job of reassuring her than reassuring myself.

Despite Amelia being in a better mood once we leave the hospital, I’m still on edge until Edgar drops us off, and I get her safely inside her apartment.

“Alright, you go lay on the couch. I’ll fix you something to eat.” I point to the couch and offer to help, but she declines.
