“I think I’ll be fine once I get some food in me.” She grimaces as she walks over.

Amelia’s kitchen looks like a barren wasteland, but I find some frozen hamburger, a box of spaghetti noodles, and some sauce that miraculously hasn’t expired. I work on dinner while she relaxes. Honestly, I’m just happy she isn’t fighting me about that. She’s usually the type to shrug off everything and do the exact opposite of what would be best for her.

“So what did the cowboy have to say?” I ask, as I continue to make the spaghetti.

“He’s paying my medical bills.” She leans up and shrugs. “I also might have agreed to go on a date with him the next time he’s in town.”

“Really?” I raise a brow in surprise. “He doesn’t seem like the type of guy you usually go out with.”

“Coming from the girl who spent last night with Edgar?” She laughs and groan.

“I don’t have a type.” I lean over to stir the hamburger. “Otherwise, it wouldn’t have taken me this long to meet someone.”

“I don’t know, maybe my brains got scrambled when the car hit me.” She sighs and leans back against the couch. “I’m not a fan of the outfit, but I do like his accent, and he’s pretty fucking hot.”

“Well then, yee-haw.” I laugh. “Hopefully, he’s not as much of a disappointment as Mark.”

“Fuck Mark.” She grumbles. “I don’t even know why he invited me to the party if he wasn’t interested.”

“He may have turned out to be an asshole, but his uncle isn’t.” I grin.

“Uncle?” She asks. “Wait, Edgar’s his uncle?”

“That’s why he was at the party last night.” I grab some oven mitts and carry the spaghetti to the sink so I can drain it. “He gave me a tour of Grimwillow Manor.”

“No wonder you fell in love with him.” She laughs, but once again, a groan follows. “Is it love, or did you just get swept off your feet because he owns the house you’ve been obsessed with your whole life?”

“Somewhere in between, I think.” I drain the spaghetti, toss it in olive oil, and start fixing her a plate. “This is all new to me.”

“How long is he staying for?” Amelia sits up as I bring the food over.

“Sunday or Monday.” I put the food down and go back to the kitchen for Parmesan cheese, which is also miraculously not expired.

“Are you going to see him tonight?” She takes the cheese and tops off her spaghetti.

“I’m not going anywhere until I know you’re okay.” I sit down in the chair near the couch.

“I’m going to call my mom eventually and she’ll come take care of me.” She sighs. “I just didn’t want to do it when I was in the hospital because I knew she’d come smother me with all her hovering.”

“I’ll stay with you until she gets here.” I lean back. “But I’ll do my best not to hover.”

After watching Amelia take a few bites, my stomach rumbles, so I fix a plate for myself as well. We talk more about Edgar and the cowboy that Amelia seems to be more interested than she cares to admit, considering how much she talks about him. I can’t help but wonder if we’re both growing up a little right now. It makes sense. Our lives are changing soon. After I graduate from college, the job hunt begins, and the next chapter of my life will be written. Amelia’s already working, but she’ll have a lot more time on her hands after she finishes with school.

I think I met Edgar at the perfect time.

Maybe the cowboy will be a good influence on Amelia.

I’m not the only one who could use a Daddy to keep them in line.

Edgar

AfterdroppingBethanyoff,I spend some time in town.

I pick up a few things I forgot when I arrived, as well as a couple of things I think Bethany will like. On my way back to Grimwillow Manor, I call my secretary and ask her to reschedule everything for Monday. One more day isn’t enough time with Bethany, but I’ll take what I can get. I rehearse what I’ll say to Mark the rest of the way, but when I arrive, all the cars are gone, except for Bethany’s.

“Well damn, he already cleared out.” I sigh as I park my car.

The conversation can wait. It’s not urgent or anything, and I may not be the best person to talk to him, considering I’ve been single most of my life. This isn’t something I can share with his parents. Elly would probably faint. Mark’s always come to me for advice, so I’ll give him some when I can, even if he ignores it.
