“Excellent. I hope they get her quick. I don’t want to tell Rori it’s over until we know for sure.”
“Oh yeah, and the crime scene techs were able to recover partials and at least one full fingerprint on the cut brake line. Good call on that.”
“Thanks. I’m still kicking myself that I didn’t notice when I moved the van to load up the cake.”
“There was probably enough fluid left that it didn’t affect it.”
“Maybe. Hey, did you hear Lily gave birth to twins?”
“I did. My brother sent me a text when Alex let you all know.”
“Did you update him on the case?”
“Hell no. You’re the bodyguard and you delivered all the clues. I shouldn’t even be telling you, but I wanted you to rest easier tonight. I don’t think Cynthia will pull anything else even if we don’t get her into custody.”
“I appreciate it and I know Rori does too.”
“No problem. I’ll let you know when we have Marshall in custody. Hopefully sooner than later.”
“No shit. Take care.”
Letting out a slow sigh of relief that it was close to done and his Angel would be safe, he jumped when her arms slid around his waist. He must be getting old, tired, or something, to let anyone sneak up on him.
“What do I do too?”
“How long have you been eavesdropping?”
“Long enough to know you were talking about me and the case. Did something happen? Did the guys confess?”
“Fuck yeah they did and gave up Jim’s sister. She’s the only piece not complete, but Steele said he’d give us a call when they had her in custody in Massachusetts.”
“Is she definitely there? I worry she’s going to show up here and do something even worse.”
“She was there as of this morning. Alex has been keeping tabs on her or had until he and Lily ended up having two babies today. Rock is probably still monitoring for him.”
“But that was this morning, she could be here already.”
“She’s not.” He pulled her around to face him and tipped her chin so he could look into her one good eye. “I know I haven’t had the best track record, but this time I’m ninety-nine point nine percent sure that she’s still up north. Okay?”
“Okay.” Closing her eyes, she leaned against his chest, and it was her turn to sigh. It had been non-stop crazy for the past couple of months but with any luck, he’d have a phone call soon to tell him it was finished once and for all.
“Do you want to go back upstairs and see the babies?” Jasper asked as he led her back inside the hospital. Until that bitch was caught, he didn’t want her outside with no protection.
“Yeah. Although I got to see them while you were down here. They’re the most beautiful little people I’ve ever seen.”
“Do they have names yet?”
“Alex won’t tell us. I think they just enjoy torturing their friends.”
“It wouldn’t surprise me one bit.”
“Everything okay?” Chase asked.
“Yeah, but I’m thinking about getting Rori to a hotel so she can rest.”
“Why can’t we go back to the apartment?”
“Because until the Fire Marshall clears it, we don’t know if it’s safe. The fire did a lot of damage.”
