It had taken every ounce of restraint not to say, ‘I love you,’ but he didn’t think she was ready to hear the words yet. It surprised him that he was ready to say them. They’d known each other over six months but most of that time they’d been apart. Skype and text messages, phone calls, none of that was the same, but he knew what his heart wanted. Now it was just a matter of proving to her that she was his one and only passion.

Chapter 10

Miranda wokeup to hot breath and licks. As she slowly opened her eyes, she came face-to-face with Halo who was grinning and wagging his tail.

“Are you my wakeup call?”

“Woof.” The one word delivered gently as if he understood what she’d asked.

“Where’s Cam?” Halo jumped off the bed and left the room, making her laugh.

Sitting up against the pillows, she finger-combed her hair and thought about last night. Her cheeks grew warm just thinking about how ballsy she’d been. He’d said that maybe she just needed the right person. It sure seemed to be that way.

Jeremiah, her boyfriend in college had begged her to be more aggressive, but he was just ‘meh.’ Probably ‘bagging’ a senator’s daughter was a notch on his belt. He figured they’d get married, but there was no way in hell that was going to happen. The first thing she’d done after graduation was to break up with him. Sometimes she wondered if that had been her real motivation for joining the Deliver Hope Ministries. It had certainly gotten her out of his circle.

While she was still contemplating that earlier decision, Halo came back dragging Cam with him.

“You called, Sunshine? I’d hoped you were going to sleep in.”

“Then you need to have a word with our furry friend, here. He was breathing on my face and licking me. I thought it was you, then I realized the breath was better.”

“What?” He jumped on the bed, laughing, and grabbed one of the other pillows and smacked her on top of the head. Nothing hard and it cracked her up. Reaching behind her she got up on her knees and they had a full-fledged pillow fight until one of them split, and sent feathers flying everywhere.

Halo ran back and forth at the end of the bed, barking and jumping for the floating feathers. When he’d decided he’d been left out long enough he jumped onto the bed and tackled Cam.

It was the funniest thing Miranda had seen in a long time. Dog and handler were covered in white feathers and the dog had Cam pinned. Every time he barked, the feathers would be disturbed and float back into the air. She was laughing so hard that she could barely breathe. Her stomach muscles cramped, and she fell onto her side next to Cam, still giggling.

Halo leaned over and licked her face. It made her laugh even harder and sputter when his tongue slipped into her mouth. “Ugh, gross, Halo. You’re as bad as Cam. Always trying to get your tongue in my mouth.”

“Except you like mine,” Cam said and waggled his eyebrows. She couldn’t disagree with that. She needed to brush her teeth so she could have another one of those toe-curling kisses.

“I’ll be right back. And keep that dog out of the bathroom.”

“Yes, ma’am. Would you like some coffee?”

“Oh, yeah. That would be wonderful.”

“Here or in the kitchen?”

“Kitchen might be a better idea. I don’t like feathers in my coffee.”

“Good point.”

Brushing her teeth, turned into a shower and washing her hair. It helped ease some of the soreness from yesterday. She wasn’t sure whether it was more from hitting the hard sidewalk or the busy night in bed. Probably the nighttime lovemaking session, she was already looking forward to the next time. Just thinking about it made her wet. She half-hoped he’d get tired waiting for her and join her in the shower.

Then she realized what she’d said. Yesterday she was worried about him seeing her naked body and all the scars and today she wanted him in the shower with her. After drying off, she wiped down the mirror to take a good look at herself. Most of the scars were on her belly and down her legs, they were angry, red, ragged and some of them still looked unhealed. Not a pretty site at all, but after the way Cam had treated her last night, she didn’t look at them the same way.

“Are you almost done, or do I need to come in there and help you?”

Now he asks, so much for timing. “I’m just getting dressed, I’ll be right out.”

“Too bad.”

Yeah, no kidding she said under her breath and then started giggling. Man one night of mind-blowing sex and she was a new woman. As she dragged a comb through her damp hair and added a touch of mascara, she wondered if she’d seem different to anyone else. Not that she cared, she liked this version of herself. But was it just the glow of last night? She wouldn’t know until she had to go back to Georgia, and the thought of leaving Cam squeezed her heart.

Gathering her toiletries she put them back in her case and followed the aroma of coffee. Entering the kitchen, she was surprised to find the table set, a mug of coffee waiting for her, and Cam frying bacon. She was about to comment on it when she realized he was also on the phone.

Rather than interrupt she petted Halo on the head as she passed him and grabbed her coffee mug and went into the living room. A few moments later, Cam came to find her.
