“So you’re going to be bait?”

Murph winced, it sounded horrible, but it was exactly what they were going to do. It was their best chance to end this once and for all.

“Yes, but it’s not as dangerous as it sounds,” Murph added. “I will not let him harm a hair on her head, I promise.”

“I’m going to hold you to that, Drew Murphy.”

Hearing her call him by name instead of his nickname took him by surprise, few people besides his team even knew it.

“I wouldn’t expect anything else.”

“When is this going to happen?” Pam asked as she sat next to Jen on the couch and took her hand.

“As soon as we figure out where to take her,” Jake replied.

“You could go to your fishing spot, Jen.”

“What fishing spot?” Murph asked.

“Jen and her dad used to go on weekend fishing trips. It’s not too far from here,” Pam answered as she stood up and went over to the desk in the corner of the room. “We still own the cabin. No one has been there in almost twenty years. It might be a pile of rubble by now.”

“I didn’t think we still had it? Didn’t you sell it after Daddy died?” Jen said. “It was a cute little cabin, not enough room for all of us though.”

“Pam, do you have the address?” Jake asked.

“Yup, that’s what I’m looking for. I have the paperwork in here somewhere,” she replied as she searched through the drawers. “Got it.”

“We’ll check it out tomorrow, make sure it’s in good enough shape to use and get supplies. If it’s a no-go we’ll have plan B,” Murph said.

“What is Plan B?” Jen asked.

“You’ll stay with one of us until we can come up with another spot.”

“No, I can’t put any of you in danger. Especially not when you have Miranda, Meghan, and Chrissy living with you,” Jen objected.

“Then you can stay with me. I have a two-bedroom apartment. And trust me, I can handle Walker,” Murph answered. He expected her to object and was surprised when she didn’t. No matter what, Sky was going to have to put her trust in him. Staying alone in the cabin or his apartment would be a big step for her, but there really wasn’t any other option.

The team had talked about this earlier. It would work, but the cabin was definitely a better idea. It would be less populated in case something went sideways. And from their experience, something always went sideways.

“I’m not thrilled about any of these options, but at least if we’re in the cabin there’s less chance of anyone else being hurt,” Jen said finally. “Will Mom be okay here? I mean he thinks I’m here right? I don’t want him to come after her use her to lure me in.”

“We’ll make sure Pam is safe.”

“Alright, I guess we have a plan. If the cabin is okay, are we going there tomorrow?”

“Yes, we’ll either go to the cabin or my place tomorrow,” Murph replied.

“Okay.” That’s all she said then she got up and went into the kitchen carrying her empty glass of water.

Murph followed her but made sure to stay where she could see him. “Are you going to be okay staying alone with one of us?”

“I have to be, don’t I? I didn’t give us any other choice.”

“There are always other choices. But, these make the most sense. If being alone with a man isn’t going to work for you we won’t do it.”

Jen searched his gaze. It seemed like she could see into his soul. She had to know he’d never hurt her or let anyone else. Just being around her made him happy. Once this mess was over, he wanted to see if they had a future together. It surprised him, but there it was. Something about her pierced him right in the heart.

“Okay.”
