Murph crushed her in his embrace, then pulled back to check for injuries.

“I’m fine. He didn’t touch me. It’s Mom that he hurt.”

“I lost years off my life thinking he had you,” Murph whispered against Jen’s head.

“I’m okay, I’m really okay,” her mom answered. Tony hadn’t let her go yet.

“Nice shooting, Ramirez,” Jake said as he stood over Kurt’s body.

Murph tried to block her view, but she’d already seen it all. His eyes stared sightlessly at the ceiling while blood oozed from his elbow and head. Still shaking from the adrenaline, Murph’s rubbed his hand up and down her back, soothing her. She couldn’t fight the urge to get out of there. Away from his body. Away from the blood.

“I need fresh air, please,” she begged as her vision swirled before it all went black.

Chapter 16

Catching her as she collapsed, Murph carried her outside with Rafe running interference. Jake stayed with Pam and Tony to help how he could, and Ryan and Cam made sure no one got inside the bar. Sure the police were there, but the big SEALs were a lot more imposing.

The last thing any of them wanted was to see Sky’s photo plastered all over social media. Privacy became virtually non-existent once the internet and smartphones were easily acquired by anyone who wanted one, and it wasn’t just at home. It made keeping the low profile they needed a lot more difficult.

“Rafe, can you get the keys to the apartment from Pam?” Murph asked. It was the only place he could think to take her that wasn’t back inside.

“Yeah, maybe we can get them all upstairs. The police can interview them up there away from the body.”

Jen stirred in his arms and her eyes popped open.

“Easy, sweetheart. You’re okay, I’ve got you,” Murph said gently. Lowering her to the ground he kept his arm around her to make sure she wouldn’t fall. “Are you feeling any better?”

“Yeah. I don’t know what happened. Everything was spinning.”

“There’s an ambulance out front, do you want to go and get checked out?”

“No way. If anyone needs to be checked it’s Mom,” Jen said. “Where is she? Is she okay?”

“She’s fine. Rafe went to get the keys for the apartment and so we can get you all upstairs. The crime scene team will be in there for a while and I’d rather you be away from the body.”

She shuddered in his arms obviously replaying her memories. “I didn’t know Tony had a gun or even knew how to shoot one.”

“And a license for concealed carry too. I overheard him telling the police,” Rafe said as he returned with her mom and the keys.

“Where is he?” Jen asked.

“The police are talking to him. Jake is going to stay with him, and we have Tex on standby,” Rafe said as he unlocked the door to the apartment to get them upstairs.

“Does that mean he heard everything Kurt said?”

“Yup, he heard and recorded all of it. If the police try to charge Tony, we should have plenty of information to make sure they can’t. Tex also sent the police to Walker’s apartment in New York, based on what he said about the women. They found a box of ‘trophies’ from his kills hidden in his office. He’d been doing it for a long time. And it’s over now because of your bravery,” Murph said. “This could have gone very wrong if you hadn’t called Tex.”

Inside the apartment, Rafe helped Pam to her room so she could lie down. Murph now knew where Sky got her inner strength. Pam impressed the hell out of him. She hadn’t panicked even with the knife against her throat.

“I so grateful he was there to answer the call,” Jen said as she sat on the couch.

“Me too, sweetheart. I just found you and I’m not letting you go. I don’t want to think about a life without you in it.” Pulling her close to his side, he tilted her head up so he could see her eyes. “I’m going to kiss you now. Really kiss you. If it’s too soon or too much, tell me now.”

Instead of answering she reached up and pulled his face to hers. Her lips were cool against his and so soft. He wanted to let her set the pace the fear of almost losing her was too much. His tongue slid between her lips and he swept her mouth, learning her taste.

Her arms slid around his neck as he lifted her onto his lap. He needed more and only his iron willpower stopped him from carrying her into her room. His willpower and the police investigators who’d just come into the apartment.
