“Thank you, Mom. I don’t know how you’re not furious with me.”

“How could I be? The blame belongs to that mug jerk in New York for putting his hands on my baby girl. I’m glad you came home where we can keep you safe.”

“But what if he comes here? If Murph recognized me, it’s only a matter of time before someone else does.”

“We’ll cross that bridge when we get there, okay? Now let me go get your burger.”

“She’s right, and we have your back.”

“Alright, before my burger gets here, what do you want to know?” Her stomach growled in agreement loud enough that Murph heard it.

He chuckled and her cheeks warmed with embarrassment. Thank God she wasn’t interested in dating, because after tonight she’d be afraid to know what he thought of her.

Murph reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. “I’m going to take some notes then I’ll send them to Tex.”

“Okay.”

“Does Kurt have a middle name?”

Thinking for a moment she tried to remember what was on his business card. It had been a while since she’d seen it. But then she remembered. “He has a middle initial on his business cards. It’s the letter T.”

“Good. Kurt Walker is a pretty common name. Even though we know the law firm and his address, we want to find out more about his background.”

“Does he have any scars, tattoos, any distinguishing marks on his body?”

“Yes, an appendectomy scar.” Jen averted her eyes when she realized that he’d know she’d seen Kurt naked. Someone needed to invent something to erase specific memories. If there was a way to remove all trace of him she’d jump all over that.

As she watched, Murph typed into his phone. “Do you know anything about his past? Family, friends?”

“The only friends I met were work associates. No one visited unless we hosted a dinner party. Mostly, we had dinner out with his fellow attorneys or clients.”

“No mention of a family at all?”

“Nope. I guess that is kind of weird. Isn’t it?”

“You dated for about two months you said before you moved into his loft?”

“Yes, we decided it would be cheaper for me to not renew my lease and move in.”

Murph nodded and made more notes.

“Did you tell him about your mom?”

“A little, but he really wasn’t interested. I wanted to visit but he wouldn’t let me come alone and he kept saying he was too busy.”

“So he doesn’t know you’re from Norfolk?”

“I don’t think so, but he could have run a background check on me at any time. I wouldn’t put it past him.”

Nodding, he two-finger tapped into his phone. Her stomach growled again as her mom opened the door and came in with her burger. It smelled so good and she prayed her stomach wouldn’t rebel.

“Here you go, baby. Eat it slowly so it doesn’t come back up.”

“I know. I’m thirty-two years old, not twelve,” Jen said with a smile to make sure her mom knew she was teasing.

“Don’t be a smartass. Murph, Jake wanted you to know they were heading out, but he needs you to call him as soon as you get home.”

“Thanks, Pam.”
