“There is no way you’d be able to sleep in this bed.”

“You wouldn’t believe where I can sleep. It’s no big deal. Take the bigger room.”

“Nope, actually it feels right to be in here.”

“If you change your mind…”

“I won’t. I’ll be out in a minute to start dinner.”

“Cam just showed up with a big pot of chili that Miranda made. I guess he drew the short straw for the first watch.”

“That was so sweet of her. Oh, is Halo here too?”

“Of course, Cam doesn’t go anywhere without him.”

Before Murph finished talking, the big German shepherd ran into the room and skidded to a stop in front of her. He was a beautiful dog, who just happened to be a trained soldier. Leaning down she hugged his neck and kissed him on the head.

“Hey, I’m starving are you guys ready to eat or what?” Cam said from behind Murph.

“I’m coming. Are you ever not hungry?”

“No,” they answered in unison and laughed, then left her alone to unpack. By the time she was finished, they had the table set and were having a beer. Miranda not only sent chili. She’d made an entire meal for Cam to bring over. Cornbread, salad and even a pie for dessert. She also sent enough paper plates, plasticware, and cups to last them a month.

“I need to call Miranda and thank her for doing this. It’s delicious,” Jen said after her first spoonful of the spicy dish.

After dinner, they helped Jen clear the table, but she insisted on doing the dishes while Murph and Cam did a perimeter check. Cam left Halo with her and she slipped him some cornbread after the men went outside.

“Don’t tell him, I don’t want to get in trouble.” Then she remembered there were cameras everywhere and Tex was probably watching. Not sure where they were, she looked up and said, “And you too Tex. No tattling.”

Murph started a fire in the pit out front and Cam got some folding chairs from his truck. They couldn’t talk about work since most of it was top secret, but she convinced him to tell her about how he and Halo became a team.

Sitting outside watching the flames and chatting reminded her of so many trips with her father. She missed him so much and it was kind of melancholy to be at the cabin without him. But being outside and not cooped up in the apartment made her happy. Even though Kurt could show up at any time, for that moment in time it was worth it.

As she listened to the guys chat about sports, she yawned. If she was smart she’d go to bed, but she didn’t really want to move. She must have fallen asleep because the next thing she knew, Murph was gently squeezing her hand and calling her name.

“Sky, baby, wake up. Time for bed.”

She didn’t want to move, the heat from the fire warmed her cheeks, and he’s draped his sweatshirt over her to keep the chill off her bare arms. It was too nice to move.

“C’mon, Sky,” Murph repeated and shook her a bit.

“Fine, but I wasn’t really sleeping,” she grumbled.

The men laughed. They knew that was a lie.

Standing up, she gave him back his sweatshirt. “Night, Cam, thanks for being on guard duty. Bye Halo,” she slurred, still half asleep. Murph’s hand was on her lower back as she climbed the three steps to the door.

“I’ll be right back. I’m just going to chat with Cam for a few minutes.”

“Okay,” she mumbled as she made her way to the bathroom.

Not sure at what point Sky nodded off, he figured it was probably when they were arguing over basketball. If it had been warmer, he wouldn’t have disturbed her, but the temperature had dropped, and her skin was cold when he touched her. When he said as much to Cam, he got shit for it, as expected.

“Looks like you’ll be wearing that pink tutu after all,” Cam teased.

“Nope, not happening.”
