“I think Ms. Turner understands her situation, am I correct?”
“Oh yes, I understand perfectly.”
“Any questions before I leave?”
“Just one,” Murph said and waited for the FBI agent to acknowledge him. “If Mr. Walker does come after Ms. Turner, what are her options?”
Special Agent Jones looked surprised at the question. Did he actually think bad guys did as they were told?
“If he does, then she should call me, and I will take care of it. Any other questions? Thank you for your time.”
Captain Knox escorted him out of the room.
“Are all FBI agents jerks like that guy?”
“No, most of the ones we’ve dealt with have been great. This guy must have a hell of a big fish on the line to be this much of an asshole,” Rafe answered. “It’s been a long time since I’ve seen someone so full of themselves.”
“So what happens now?” Jen asked.
“Nothing. Everyone goes back to their normal lives and we see how it goes,” Captain Knox responded as he came back into the room.
“But, Captain…” Murph started to object.
“Officially there is nothing else we can do. Unofficially, Tex will monitor Walker’s location. If he leaves New York we’ll know about it. For now, that’s the best I can do.”
Jen knew that was more than she could have asked for. “Thank you, I appreciate that.”
“I wish we could do more. But I’m sure you’ll be seeing a lot of these men when they’re not working.”
“She can count on it,” Murph responded.
* * *
“Does he really believe his own bullshit?” Vibrating with pent-up anger, Murph took a deep breath. Being pissed off wouldn’t help and only add to Sky’s stress. “We can’t just let this go.”
“We won’t. Just like Murph said. We’ve got your back, Sky.”
“Thank you, for a while there I was thinking they were just going to hang me out to dry.”
Murph pulled her into his side, wrapping his arm around her. Realizing what he’d done, he started to pull away, but she stopped him. “We would never do that to you, sweetheart. It’s against our DNA.”
“Are you done making kissy-faces at her, Murph?” Jake winked at Sky and she smiled. He would have given it right back, but since it made her smile, he’d swallow his retort.
“Yes, boss.”
“We have the afternoon off, I cleared it with the captain. Let’s meet at Murph’s apartment and we’ll figure out how to nail this asshole.”
“Do you need to drop me off at the bar?” Sky asked.
Murph couldn’t tell from her expression if she wanted to go or not. But Jake took the decision out of her hands.
“Nope, you need to be with us so you can sign off on the plan.”
“Okay then.”
As he drove to his apartment, he tried to figure out the best way to convince her to stay with him. It was safer for her with him, and after spending the last three nights with her sleeping in his arms, he didn’t want to let her go.
“Are you okay?”
