“Yeah, of course, well except for pissed off at Special Agent Asshole. Are you okay?”
“Yes, and I’m mad too. But you’re a lot quieter than usual.”
Not one to pull punches and trying to come up with the perfect way to ask, he just blurted it out. “I want you to stay with me. At least until Walker is handled, but for as long as you want. I was serious at the cabin when I said I wanted to see where this leads. And after spending the last few days with you, I can’t imagine not being around you every day.”
“Okay.”
“Okay, what?”
“I’ll stay with you until Kurt is handled, but I don’t know about after that. I’ll be honest, I would miss you too if I don’t see you. But the main reason is to keep my mother safe.”
“How so?”
“If he comes after me, you’ll be able to protect me, and I don’t have to worry as much about him hurting you. My mother would be easy prey for him.”
“Understood. You can sleep in the second bedroom and have your own space. Just like at the cabin, you’ll set the rules.”
“Thank you, Drew. I don’t know what I’d have done if not for you and your teammates. Probably be halfway to Alaska by now.”
“You never have to thank me. And I’m very glad you’re not on your way to Alaska. It’s too damn cold there and I’d just have to come up with an excuse to bring you back.”
Feeling a whole lot better as he pulled into his assigned parking spot, Murph helped her out of the truck then grabbed the supplies they’d brought back from the cabin.
Rafe, Ryan, and Cam were already there. Halo ran up to Sky immediately. He didn’t know what it was about them, but they had a bond he didn’t have with the other women.
“What took you so long? Did you take the scenic route?” Rafe asked as he grabbed a bag from Murph.
“Nah he probably pulled over to try to get some kisses,” Cam teased.
When Sky’s face turned bright pink, Murph wanted to punch him. “No, we just left after everyone else. You guys need to grow up.”
Jake arrived in time to hear what Murph said. “They need to grow up? Aren’t you the king of sex talk? I seem to remember a list of them somewhere. I think my favorite is boppin’ squiddlies’.”
“Mine is ‘batter dipping the corn dog’,” Ryan said.
“Nah, the best is ‘taking the bald-headed gnome for a stroll in the misty forest’,” Rafe said with a snort. “Admit it, that’s the best one.”
Jen looked up at Murph, she’d heard some of them before, but he knew he hadn’t said the last one in front of her. It was one of his favorites.
“You actually said that? You do know I’ll ever be able to look at a gnome again without thinking about that.”
Rafe laughed. “Meghan has the same problem. But I’m pretty sure that is the point.”
“It’s just stuff I picked up over the years. It doesn’t mean anything,” Murph replied. Rafe wasn’t totally wrong but the real reason was it reminded him that it was just sex, not love, not attachment, just plain old getting off. But now that’s he’d met Sky that changed. He didn’t want to do the ‘four-legged foxtrot’ or anything else. No, he hoped that one of these days he’d be able to spend the day making love to her.
“Are you going to go inside?” Ryan asked.
“Yeah, c’mon.”
Murph let them into the building and took them up to his apartment on the second floor. Unlocking the door he held it open for Sky. “Home sweet home.”
Murph had been in the apartment for about five years and was happy with it until he looked at it through her eyes. Big seventy-inch TV, overstuffed chairs and a loveseat. The kitchen had a small table for two and the dining room area had a big pool table.
“Your room is down here,” he said leading Sky down the hallway, while the guys took care of the other bags. “We can redecorate if you want?” He wasn’t used to feeling so awkward, but he’d never wanted a woman as badly as he wanted Sky.
“I like your place. Even the pool table. I’m quite the pool shark.”
“We’ll have to see about that.”
