“Got it. That’s who you were talking to the whole time?”

“Tex called after I hung up with Jake to let us know that some of the New York stations had shown it live and others were already teasing it for the evening news.”

“And that’s good, right?”

“It’s exactly what we wanted.”

“Now we wait,” Jen said almost under her breath.

“Yes, now we wait,” Murph answered her around bites of his burger. “Hey, Tony. Do you think you could make five of these to go?”

“Will do.”

“Do you want to stay here or go back to the apartment? I have to go to work for a few hours. I don’t want to take advantage of the captain’s good graces. I think he likes you so that helps.”

Jen smiled. “I think I’ll hang out here with Mom. I can meet you back at the apartment later.”

“I’ll swing by and pick you up on my way home.”

She could have argued but what was the point? He would eventually get his own way. She hadn’t told him, but she’d come up with a new nickname for him—Mr. Bossy Pants. It wasn’t the most original name ever, but it fit him perfectly.

Jen woke up alone, but Murph had kissed her goodbye when he’d left at four-thirty for PT. A piece of paper on the nightstand caught her eye.

I’m sorry I can’t be there this morning. Text me when you wake up. You make me so happy.

Drew

After re-reading the note, she grabbed her phone and sent him a text.

Sky:You make me happy too. Good morning.

Murph:Morning. In a briefing. Text soon.

Sky:Okay

It was strange being alone in his apartment. If she was going to stay, she needed to find a job. She could work at the Ready Room, her mother already asked her. But was never what Jen wanted.

Murph left her the password to his computer, and after brewing a pot of coffee, she started a job search. Two cups of coffee later she hadn’t found any prospects, but she wasn’t sure what she wanted to do either. Working in the bookstore had been wonderful but Kurt had ruined it for her. Giving up for the day, she grabbed a shower. As she dried her hair, she decided it was time to find a salon to help her go back to her natural blonde locks.

She’d left her phone next to the laptop. The blue light was blinking. Damn, if it was Murph he’d probably already be on his way over since she didn’t answer. But it wasn’t. It was her mom.

Mom:Can you come over to the bar as soon as possible? I need your help.

It was kind of weird for her to text and not call.

Me:On my way.

After ordering an Uber and deciding she needed to get a car or something to get around easier, she texted Murph to let him know she was going to the bar. When he didn’t respond she figured he was still in his briefing, and if he didn’t get the message she knew that Tex would be able to tell him where she was because of the phone.

Fifteen minutes later, she walked in through the back door.

“Hey, Mom?”

It was quiet. Too quiet. They weren’t open yet but even if only her mom was there the TVs would have been on. She checked the office, nothing looked out of place, but her mom wasn’t there. Maybe she’d had was in the apartment.

But something didn’t feel right to Jen. She wasn’t sure what made her do it, but she pulled her phone out of her pocket and dialed Tex as she walked through the doors into the kitchen.
