“I’m your brother, and I couldn’t ditch the big guy though I tried.” Rafe chuckled. “I’ll go grab the blankets and stuff. You two can make kissy faces, and I won’t have to see it.”

Dawn rolled her eyes at her brother, but as soon as his feet hit the stairs, Jake pulled her into his arms. He smelled like the forest, probably from being around the pines, and also chocolate. She slid her arms around his waist and smiled against his chest. It would be way too easy to get used to this.

“Are you okay, angel? I know this was rough. But he’s home now, and I don’t think he’ll do this again. He was pretty scared when we found him.”

“I just keep thinking if you both didn’t come, he’d still be out there. Not that the police weren’t trying, but who knows how long it would have taken them to find him?”

“But we are here, and he’s upstairs, sound asleep in his bed.”

“Yes.” Dawn shuddered.

Jake pulled her closer, sending sparks of heat down her spine. Now that Chase was safe, she could breathe again. But that left room for all of her unresolved feelings for Jake to bombard her. His slightest touch sent desire coursing through her veins. He flipped switches she never knew existed. Ones Bob hadn’t even found. And that was what scared her the most.

Jake tipped her chin, and she looked at his mouth, then further up to meet his gaze as his pupils dilated. He gave her a chance to stop him, to say no, but even if her life had depended on it, she couldn’t have pushed him away. She ran her tongue over her bottom lip, and his pupils dilated. That made her brave, and she reached up and slid her hands into the dark hair at the base of his neck. Her heart beat so hard he had to hear it, too.

As Jake’s lips touched hers, she parted them. He deepened the kiss, and her sex throbbed with need. Their tongues rubbed together as he explored her mouth. Dawn drew closer, and her nipples tightened into hard peaks as they rubbed against his chest.

He pulled her closer until his erection pressed against her stomach, and she moaned into his mouth. He sank one of his hands into her hair and cupped the back of her head, holding her in place as he thoroughly claimed her mouth.

Dawn would have stayed in his arms forever. Wanted to stay there. But too soon, he ended the kiss and rested his forehead against hers. She blinked up at him, passion replaced by disappointment.

“Angel, If I don’t stop now, I’ll carry you upstairs and make you mine. But you’re not ready, and I promised I’d wait until you were. We’ll talk later after you’ve had a chance to rest and process everything that happened today.”

He stepped back, and his arms dropped to his sides. Dawn instantly missed his warmth and shivered, wanting nothing more than to be back in his arms. But he was right, she wasn’t ready…although she wouldn’t have stopped him, either.
