Still panting, Dawn collapsed against his chest, her arms sliding around his back. He hadn’t pulled out, and his cock still throbbed inside her.

“Angel, as much as I’d love to stay here with you forever, I need to get rid of this condom. Are you okay?”

“Mmm hmm, better than okay. I may never walk right again though.” Dawn giggled.

“I’ll help you. Just hold on, and I’ll get us onto the bank.”

“I’m too heavy.”

“You don’t weigh as much as the pack I carry on missions, trust me.” Jake hugged her close as he lifted her to remove the condom.

He lifted her out of the water and climbed up onto the bank.

Her skin broke out in goosebumps from the shock of the chilly mountain air. “Dang. It’s cold,” Dawn said through chattering teeth.

“Hold on, angel. I’ve got you.” Jake put her down and wrapped them in a large silver thermal blanket he pulled out of his pack. “Better?”

“Yes, thank you.” Dawn shouldn’t feel self-conscious, but she did. Even though she’d just had the best sex of her life, now that they were out of the water and out of their steamy little hideaway, she worried that it hadn’t been good for him. It had been over two years since she’d been with a man, and she’d only ever had sex with Bob. Her experience was pitiful compared to Jake’s.

“You’re thinking too hard again,” Jake said.

“How do you keep doing that?”

“One sure sign is when you get wrinkles in your forehead. But everything you think or feel is obvious from your facial expressions. Didn’t anyone ever tell you that?”

“Nope, you’re the first. Maybe you have super-secret powers?”

Jake chuckled, and his cock twitched between them. Holy cow, he was still hard?

“I don’t think that’s it. We should probably put our clothes on and head back before Rafe sends a search party for us. I’ll grab your stuff, then you can get dressed inside the blanket.”

“Thank you. I really appreciate it,” Dawn murmured.Damn. She sounded like some wimpy woman, and that wassonot her. What the hell was wrong with her?

“I didn’t hurt you, did I?” Jake handed her the pile of clothes and held the blanket around her like a curtain.

“No, not at all. It was a little uncomfortable, more like too full. But only for a few minutes.”

“Then what’s wrong, angel? You can tell me anything,” Jake prodded.

Dawn pulled on her underwear and bra, then her jeans and sweater while trying to find the words. Then she gave up and blurted it out. “I’m not experienced, and I’m worried it sucked.”

Jake burst out laughing, and she glared at him.

“Angel, it couldn’t have been more perfect. I’m sorry for laughing. It was so much better than I’d been dreaming about.”

Jake dropped the blanket, and she got a good look at all of him—head to toe.Holy shit. His muscles had muscles. When he turned away from her to grab his clothes, she noticed more scars, mostly faded, crisscrossed his right side. It was a weird pattern, and she wondered what caused it. But then she saw the gunshot wound in his shoulder and sucked in her breath, the sight chilling her to the bone.

“What’s wrong?” Jake turned and checked the area.

“Your shoulder. It looks somewhat recent, and you didn’t tell me.” Dawn tried to keep the accusation out of her voice, but he should have told her.

He pulled on his clothes and then folded her into his arms. “It happened before we started talking so much, just over a year ago. I’d forgotten about it.”

“How can you forget something like that?” Dawn couldn’t fathom forgetting something like that.

“I’ve been in the Navy since I was twenty-two, I’m almost thirty-nine. I don’t dwell on the injuries; they’re not important. I came home alive, that’s all that’s important.”

Dawn nodded. His attitude made sense. It was his job, one he loved. But it reminded her of why she’d avoided a relationship all along. One day he might not come back. Could she live through that kind of loss again? Did she have any other option?
