“How are you, angel? Jake asked.

They kneeled at the river’s edge and Dawn filled the basin with water and dish soap and tossed in the utensils. As she finished with them, he dried them then placed them in the other container.

“I’m great. Why?” Dawn stopped scrubbing the pot and looked at him in the dim light of the lantern.

“Just checking. We had sex, and you might be sore, or worse, you might regret it.”

Dawn grinned and wiggled her hips. “No regrets here, SBA. How could I? We’ve been building up to this for months. I kept you away, because falling for you scared the crap out of me. I worried I’d end up heartbroken again.”

Once again, she’d surprised him.

“What about you?” she asked, as she scrubbed the bean pot.

“I’ve never been better,” he responded as he caressed her cheek.

“You’re an amazing man, and I can’t believe that you want to be with me. I won’t lie, I’m still scared about what the future holds, but I won’t run from it anymore.”

Her words eased the tightness in his chest and he slowly let out his breath.

“Today is just the beginning, angel. There is so much more I want to do with you, in bed and out.” Just thinking about fucking her again made his cock throb. Their hot spring sex hadn’t made a dent in his need to bury himself deep inside her.

“I want that, too.” Her voice sounded hoarse.

Jake took the pot from her hands, slid his arms around her waist, and pulled her onto his lap. He’d never have his fill of her, and only sheer willpower kept him from lying her down and making love to her. “You are beautiful, intelligent, an amazing mother, and the sexiest woman I’ve ever met. You make me so hard it hurts.” He took her hand and put it over his erection.

“I want you too, Jake. I thought I’d lost my desire for sex when I lost Bob. But I’ve never been so perpetually horny in my life. I’m surprised my vibrator hasn’t burned up since we started talking. And damn, I can’t believe I just told you that.” She shook her head and tucked it against his chest.

Jake chuckled, then tilted her head up so he could see her face. “No hiding. I’m glad I make you hot. You wouldn’t believe how many nights I thought about you and jerked off so I could get to sleep.”

“Really?”

“Angel, you are it for me. I want you and the kids to be a part of my life.” He wanted to tell her he loved her, but he didn’t want to freak her out. Everything had changed for them in two days after months of her saying she wanted to stay friends.

Dawn stiffened in his arms, and he worried he’d gone too far, but then she relaxed. “I don’t hate the idea, but I’m not sure I’m ready for that yet.”

“We’ll go as slow or fast as you want. You’re in control here.” Jake needed to kiss her. Just one gentle kiss, but as soon as their lips met, he couldn’t hold back all the desire bottled up inside of him.

Dawn’s arms snaked around his neck and held on tight as he slanted his mouth over hers, then slid his tongue past her parted lips. He wasn’t sure how long they sat that way until he finally released her. They both panted, and she smiled up at him with the most beautiful smile he’d ever seen. It took all his willpower not to kiss her again.

“You’re killing me, baby, but we need to get back to camp.”

“Yes, poor Rafe. I keep dumping the kids on him so I can sex it up with his boss.”

Jake shook his head and grinned.

They finished washing up, and he picked up the container to carry it back. Dawn walked beside him, swinging the lantern.

“Mommy,” Cindy exclaimed as soon as she saw them. “You were gone a long time. Uncle Rafe said you probably got lost.”

Jake rolled his eyes. He was going to make Rafe pay for all this teasing.

“The pot was really dirty, but everything is clean now. Are you ready to go to bed?” Dawn asked.

“Can we stay up a little longer?” Chase asked. “Uncle Rafe said he was saving the best stories for when you got back.”

Dawn laughed. “Are you kidding me, Rafe? You still have stories you haven’t told us a million times?”

“Of course. There are new ones all the time.”
