Chapter 14
After four days off, Dawn returned to her job at Bailey’s Insurance Agency. She’d expected to find a lot of work piled on her desk, but not the craziness she’d walked into. They did most of their work online, but a few of the older agents still liked to fill out the paper forms when they met with clients. Mr. Bailey required everyone to enter their own files, but it looked like that rule went out the window while Dawn was out of the office.
It had taken her most of the morning to work through about half the files and quotes she needed to get to her boss. By lunchtime, she was ready to go home and was thankful she’d packed a lunch for herself when she’d made the kids’ for school. It was their first day back, too. When she thought about all the homework they’d have to get through, pizza for dinner sounded like a great idea.
As she chewed a bite of her peanut butter and jelly sandwich, she thought about Jake for the millionth time since he’d left. There had been no word from him or Rafe. She’d even called Meghan last evening to see if she’d heard anything. As usual, they were on mission silence, and the women would just have to wait until they returned to base to hear from their men.
Her man.Warmth filled her as she thought about Jake. After she’d gotten the kids down for bed last night, she’d been restless, even after speaking to Meghan for almost an hour. That was the part Dawn hated. Why couldn’t she have fallen for someone with a nine-to-five job who came home every night? Because they wouldn’t be her sexy SEAL. And she was his as much as he was hers. She just hadn’t told him yet.
Unable to find anything she wanted to watch on TV, she’d decided she might as well shower and go to bed. As Dawn stood under the hot water, she thought about being in the hot springs with Jake. He’d been so tender with her, making sure she was ready for him.
Closing her eyes, she’d run her hands over her sensitive skin. Her nipples peaked, and she pinched them, imagining it was Jake touching her. Slowly, she slid her hand over her stomach, to her mound and then along her lips, already wet from desire.
A soft moan had escaped as she continued to pleasure herself. Then she’d touched her clit, imitating how he’d used his fingers on the hard nub, rubbing and pinching. After just a few strokes, she shuddered, her muscles tightening, and her knees almost giving out as she came hard. Shaking her head after her breathing returned to normal, she finally pushed off the shower wall and washed her hair and body. Who needed fantasies when dating Mr. Sex on a Stick?
Dawn’s cheeks heated from the memory. She discarded the rest of her lunch and hurried to the restroom to wash her hands and splash some water on her face. At the last minute, she’d grabbed her purse from the desk drawer so she could freshen her makeup.
Returning to her desk a few minutes later, she was sliding her purse back into the drawer when she heard the muffled ringing of her phone. She usually left it in her purse since her boss didn’t approve of them using their phones while working. Not that she could blame him. It didn’t bother her. The school had her office numbers and so did Janey, and they always called there first if there was a problem.
Dawn planned on turning off the ringer and leaving it on vibration and returning the phone to her purse until she saw the caller’s name.
“Rafe? Does this mean you’re back? I’ll call you after I get home. I’m at work and—”
“Dawn, I’m not home yet, I’m in Germany. We’re heading home soon. But…”
She heard Rafe take a deep breath. This couldn’t be good.
“Jake’s hurt. He’ll be here a few extra days until he’s stable, then they’ll send him to Walter Reed.” Rafe’s voice was rough with emotion.
“What?” Dawn’s brain swam with dizziness. Her mouth pooled with saliva and she broke out in a sweat as she tried not to throw up on her desk as a wave of nausea rolled through her.
“I’m so sorry, sis.”
“What happened?” Dawn choked out the words while trying to hold back her tears. This couldn’t be happening again.
“I can’t tell you. Fuck, I’m not even supposed to be telling you this much since you’re not family or on his notification list.”
“Don’t, just don’t. I’ll kick your ass, big brother or not.”
Rafe chuckled on the other end of the phone. “Why do you think I called? Besides, Jake would kick my ass worse if I didn’t tell you.”
Dawn calmed down a fraction, and the nausea passed. If Rafe was joking about his friend, it couldn’t be that bad, could it?
“Rafe, tell me the truth. Am I going to lose him?” Dawn sucked in a breath, willing herself not to lose it. It wasn’t the first time she was happy she had her own office and wasn’t sitting large open area of the agency.
“Jake’s one of the toughest men I know. I have to believe he’ll survive, but he won’t be the same,” Rafe answered.
“What does that mean? Actually, I don’t care. I’ll see for myself. I’m coming to Virginia with the kids.”
“Sis, you’re always welcome, but I don’t know that you’ll be able to see him. You’re not family.”
His words kicked her in the stomach, and her heart twisted in her chest. She wouldn’t give up that easily. She loved him, even if she’d never told him. Nothing would keep her from being by his side when he needed her most.
“Miranda’s dad is still a senator, right? Have her call him and see if he can get me special dispensation or something. If Senator Stanhope won’t help, I’ll find another way,” Dawn said with conviction.
“You love him enough to go through whatever happens? Even after Bob?” Rafe sounded surprised.
“Well, yeah. Why else…? Never mind. It doesn’t matter. When do you think he’ll get home?” she asked.
