What was it with all these guys? Did the SEAL recruitment team require more than killer skills? Maybe big, sexy, and gorgeous was also a requirement from what she’d seen already. It had to make staying hidden that much harder. Just thinking about Ry in danger made her stomach turn over and she lost her appetite.

“All I needed was to find an apartment, and there were plenty to choose from.”

What she didn’t say was that the best of all was when Chrissy and Meghan walked into the bank and sat down in front of her desk. It was the day she’d met her first friends, and not just in Virginia, but in all her life—or friends her dad hadn’t chased away.

Fergus nodded. “Do you enjoy it? Working at the bank, I mean.”

“Usually, although it’s a lot different here than it was back home. I lived in a small town and mostly everyone knew each other. Virginia Beach is definitely not a small town.”

Fergus chuckled. “No, that’s for sure. Before I joined the Navy, I lived in a small town in Wyoming. So, I get it.”

“Yes. But most people are friendly. My boss and I don’t always agree. She’s all about the bank and not the people. I’m used to more flexibility and here it’s all stick to the rules.”

“It sounds a lot like the Navy.”

“I guess it does.” Harmony smiled.

“Unfortunately,” Ry chimed in.

Harmony turned her head to find him watching her, and then exchange glances with Fergus. Had he asked his friend to talk to her? Sky’s early remark about alphas slid through her thoughts like an ugly worm. Planting seeds of worry. Then she told herself she was being silly. Fergus was being polite to the new girl.

“I wonder how many jobs are?” Fergus asked.

“Probably most of them,” Ry replied as his hand kneaded her shoulder, releasing the tension tightening her muscles.

“Weird. But you’re right, we all have rules to follow. Even if you have your own business. Certain things always need to be done,” Harmony mused. Owning her own business was one of her dreams. But it would probably have to be a bubble wrap store just to make sure she didn’t destroy all her products.

“Yes, but not all of them hurt others when they’re made,” Ry said with an angry edge to his voice.

Harmony nodded and wondered if he was thinking about Harry Ericson or something he’d done on his last mission. This time, she’d wait until they were alone to ask. If it was his job, he wouldn’t be able to tell her. If it was about Harry, maybe he’d be able to help her come up with a solution to help.

“Excuse me,” Quinn said from Ry’s other side. Then he walked away from the table with his phone to his ear.

“Well fuck, we just got back,” Ry grumbled.

“They wouldn’t send us out again unless they didn’t have a choice. It’s probably just a call. I’d bet Rafe would get a call before us.”

“I hope so.”

“Am I missing something?” Harmony asked.

Fergus grinned. “Ry is worried that Quinn’s call is about a new mission.”

“Oh, you mean you might have to leave, already? You just got back.” Harmony tried to keep the whininess out of her voice.

“Not likely,” Rafe said. “Fergus is right, they’d send us out first. We didn’t just return from a mission.”

“Do you all have supersonic hearing or something? It’s loud in here and you heard our discussion from over there?” Harmony asked.

“Yes, we’re fitted with special devices.”

Harmony was sure she had a look of horror on her face. Until Ry and Fergus busted out laughing.

“He’s teasing you. We’re just used to being tuned in all the time,” Ry said, and grinned.

“Ahh, I see how you are. Tease the hayseed,” Harmony tried to sound hurt but couldn’t hold back her chuckle.

“I’m sorry, Harmony, but it was too easy,” Rafe said, attempting to sound like he was sorry.
