“Yeah, that’s pretty much what I thought. All I know so far is that she’s from Norwalk, Iowa. From what she’s said, it’s one of those towns where everyone knows each other.”
“I’ll see what Chrissy can dig up. She still has lots of connections in the FBI,” Ryan said.
“Thanks, bro. I appreciate you both being here.”
“Are you kidding me? Have you met my wife, the spitfire?” Rafe grinned.
“Yeah, and the only reason Chrissy isn’t here is that she got called in on something,” Ryan said.
“Harmony will appreciate knowing she has lots of friends now. From the few things she’s mentioned, I think she’s spent most of her life being alone.” If he had his way, she’d never be alone again.
“That fucking sucks,” Luca Rossi said. “I guess it’s a good thing she’s one of us now. Right?” Then he looked over at Ry for confirmation.
“Yeah, she’s one of us, even if she doesn’t know it yet.”
The others nodded.
“What do you need us to do?” Quinn asked.
“The police are tracking down Ericson. If it’s him, they should catch him before he does anything else. But I think we need to look at her past. Figure out what the deal is with her father and her ex-boyfriend. I’m hoping she’ll tell me, but if her father is behind this, I’m not sure we should wait.”
“You know the shit is going to hit the fan when she finds out, right?” Josh said.
“Yeah, probably, but hopefully she’ll understand why we did it,” Ry answered, and prayed he was right. If he lost Harmony because he needed to keep her safe, he could live with that. Maybe.
“We’ve got your six,” Fergus said.
“I never doubted it.” Ry grinned at his friends and teammates. They would always be there for each other without question. “I need to get back to Harmony. I promised I’d be quick.”
“Let me get the water from my truck. I grabbed some protein bars too. I wasn’t sure how long you guys would be with the cops.”
“Thanks, I’m not sure either. But I’m not letting her sleep here even if they let her into her apartment,” Ry said as he unlocked the truck and reached into the back to grab a sweatshirt out of his go-bag.
“She can stay with us if she doesn’t want to stay with you,” Rafe suggested.
“Thanks, I might have to take you up on that. We’ll see. I’m hoping she’ll stay with me. Maybe Whiskey can convince her. She loves that dog.” Ry grinned.
“He’s a hell of a lot more lovable than you are, fucker,” Josh added.
“That’s the truth, too,” Luca said with a grin.
“Yeah, yeah. Enjoy your fun while it lasts. Payback’s a bitch. All right, I need to get back to Harmony. I’ll call if I find out anything.”
“Don’t forget to text us the note. And we’ll let you know what we find out,” Quinn said, and thumped Ry on the back.
“Thanks, I really appreciate it. Sorry to drag you all out here. I thought I’d have more information.”
Josh handed him a bag with a six-pack of water bottles and the protein bars. “No problem, you’d do the same for any of us. Just take care of your woman.”
“You know I will.” Ry liked how that sounded. His woman. Now he just had to convince her.
As soon as Ry reached Harmony’s side, the detective excused himself and walked over to one of the other officers.
“Is everything okay,” Ry asked as he draped his hoodie over Harmony’s shoulders and handed her a water bottle.
“Yes, I think he was afraid to leave me alone. But I have Whiskey and couldn’t be safer,” she answered and leaned forward to hug his dog.
If Ry hadn’t been watching, she would have pitched headfirst onto the asphalt parking lot. She’d misjudged the distance and lost her balance. But he caught her before she hit the ground.
