“I think I can figure out where it is,” Harmony teased.

“Yes, I’m sure you can, but I love touching you. If it makes you uncomfortable—”

Harmony raised two fingers and put them over his lips. “It doesn’t. I enjoy touching you, too. Unless you’re worried that I’ll fall on my face and sue you,” she said.

Ry flashed her one of his one-hundred-megawatt smiles, then kissed her hand. “No, ma’am. Besides, I’ve already given you my most cherished possession… my heart.”

Thank goodness he was holding her hand, because her heart flipped over, and all the blood rushed from her head. He’d mentioned earlier that he was falling for her, but could it be true? Did he see something in her she didn’t see in herself? She hoped so, because she was almost positive that she’d fallen for him, too.

“I…I don’t—”

“Sweetheart, there’s no pressure here, honest. I learned a long time ago that waiting for the right time didn’t always work out. I’m thirty-one years old and I know my mind and my heart. But if you’re not there yet, or never get there, it’s okay, too. You’re stuck with me as a friend either way.”

Harmony tried to hold back the tears that blurred her vision. Until Ry, she’d never known men could be kind and understanding. And he was all three, cubed. “You mean a lot to me, too.” It felt lame after what he’d just said, but she had a lot of things to think about, and she needed to get through this mess with Harry or her father, or whoever it ended up being.

Ry stopped at the door of her room and kissed her gently on the lips like he’d just taken her home after a date, which he had—just not the way they’d planned on.

“I hope our next date is less eventful,” Harmony said with a grin.

“You and me both. Sleep well. If you need anything, I’m just down the hall. Oh, I almost forgot. If you leave your door open, there’s a good chance that Whiskey will invite himself in and onto the bed.”

“Really? That would be so cool,” Harmony exclaimed. “I hope he does.”

Ry shook his head. “You don’t know what you’re asking for, but I guess you’ll find out soon enough.”

Harmony went into the bathroom first and brushed her teeth and washed up for bed. She’d left the bedroom door open and when she returned, Whiskey had made himself at home in the middle of the bed.

After tossing the extra pillows onto the chair in the corner, Harmony slid under the comforter. Whiskey moved over the slightest bit to give her enough room. Turning on her side, she cuddled against the dog and giggled. My first bed partner would be huge, loyal, and covered in hair. It wasn’t Ry, but Whiskey seemed to be a good cuddler.

Ry checked on Harmony a half-hour later, and she was fast asleep, curled up with Whiskey. The big dog was the best judge of character he’d ever seen, and better than any FBI profiler he’d ever met. It made Ry wonder what would happen if either Harry or her father tried to hurt her. He was sure it wouldn’t be pleasant.

Tired, but unable to sleep with all the thoughts running through his head, he got another beer from the fridge and turned on the news. More fighting had broken in Marikistan. Freedom fighters were trying to overturn the corrupt government. Nothing new really, it happened too often. He remembered hearing the name in a couple of their briefings, but he couldn’t remember the specifics. Grabbing his phone off the table, he made a note to talk to Quinn about it when he saw him. None of the Red Falcons spoke the language, and it would help if at least one of them knew some if they ended up going in.

His phone was still in his hand when a text message popped up.

Josh: Any news on your end?

Ry: Learned more about the douchebag father.

Josh: Want to talk?

Ry: Not tonight. Harmony is already asleep. I’ll be on base before nine.

Josh: No problem. Ryan talked to Chrissy. She’s doing a deep dive into all parties.

Ry: She didn’t have to deploy on a mission?

Josh: Nope. We got lucky. Or I guess Ryan did.

Ry: You are such a fucking asshole

Josh: And this surprises you? Wait till I tell you what happened with the bitch next door.

Ry: Did you ever try being nice to her?

Josh: Yes.

Ry: Didn’t go well?
