Tears coursed down his cheeks. He looked so broken.

“I’m so very sorry.” Her heart ached for him, and without thinking, she came around the desk and hugged him, all the while thinking it was a good thing Ry couldn’t see her; he’d have heart failure.

Harry hugged her back, holding tight and sobbing on her shoulder. He was so broken, and she didn’t know what to do for him.

“I’m sorry I threatened you. You’ve been nothing but kind to us. I hope you know I’d never hurt you,” he said as he released her and wiped his tears with his shirtsleeve.

Harmony reached across her desk for a box of tissues and put it in front of him. “I know that. You were just hurt and scared. If I’d had any idea this would happen, I’d never have suggested you take the loan.”

“I know. And now that I’ve lost my Barb, it doesn’t matter. I have nothing left to live for. She was my life.”

Tears filled Harmony’s eyes and her heart squeezed so tightly in her chest she had trouble breathing. His pain was palpable and devastating. “Barb wouldn’t want you to give up. Promise me you won’t do anything silly. I’ll help you, I promise.” Even as she said the words, she knew it was her vow. She would do everything she could to make sure he landed on his feet. She wasn’t sure how, but she’d make it happen.

“Don’t make promises you can’t keep, daughter.”

The blood drained out of her face, and dizziness almost knocked her over as she stood up from comforting Harry.

He’d found her.

She’d expected him to show up, eventually. Just like she knew he’d been the one to torch her car, or he’d hired someone to do it for him.

“Father, you’re a long way from home. How did you find me?” Harmony asked, trying to keep her voice calm. She wasn’t in Norwalk, he didn’t have help this time.

Harmony leaned against her desk for support and met her father’s menacing gaze.

“Awful brave now that you’re not at home. Don’t worry, I’ll fix that fast enough.” He grinned when he watched her reach for the edge of her desk.

“I’m not going back. I’mnevergoing back.”

“Oh, but you are. You have nothing left here. No job, no car, no apartment, nothing.”

“You’re wrong, I have friends—”

“You won’t have them for long. If you think they can do anything to stop me, you’ve lost your fucking mind. And sleeping with that SEAL? I always knew you were a slut, a whore, just like your mother.”

Harmony gripped the edge of her desk until her knuckles turned bright white. Her stomach turned over and she gulped air, trying to keep her stomach contents where they belonged.

“I should have known you drove Mom away. I just wish she’d taken me with her.”

“Trust me, you don’t. You wouldn’t like where she ended up. Now grab whatever you need and we’re leaving.”

“No, father. I’m not going. I have a life here. And I have a job and an apartment. I’ll get a replacement for the car you destroyed. Yeah, I figured that out. But what I don’t understand is why you hate me so much, and why you need to control me.”

“How can you treat your daughter like this? She’s one of the sweetest people I know,” Harry said as he listened to their conversation.

“This doesn’t concern you, old man. Get the fuck out,” Taylor said, as he reached behind his back and pulled out a gun, pointing it at Harmony’s chest.

“You’re crazy. You can’t drag me out of here at gunpoint. My boss won’t let you, neither will the security guard.”

“Have you looked around? Do you see anyone coming to your aid? Your boss has been feeding me updates since you started here. I know everything and she runs this bank. The guard won’t do a thing. Wendy told them all that you escaped from a mental hospital, and I’m here to take you back.”

“What? None of that is true,” Harmony exclaimed. Her hope that she’d get out of this dwindled by the moment. Why hadn’t she told Ry she loved him? Now she might never get the chance.

“It will be true. I’ll keep you locked up for the rest of your life.”

“You’re an evil man. How can you be my flesh and blood?”

Before he could answer, there was a commotion and the front and back doors of the bank. Ry and his teammates were rushing toward her. Her hero saved her.
