“Do you think you’re up for some company?” Ry asked, then took a sip of his coffee.
“Sure. I’m not broken, just a little dented,” she said. It was true, too. After everything she’d been through, she was stronger now than ever and she owed a lot of that to Ry. Though some of it was her finally realizing that she was a lot stronger than she knew, and it was kind of funny. Since the police had arrested her father, she’d been a lot less klutzy.Go figure.
“Good. Chrissy and Ryan are coming. Maybe Josh, too. I think she’ll be able to answer a lot of the questions you have.”
“Really? That would be a relief. When are they coming?”
Whiskey barked, and a moment later, the doorbell rang.
“Umm, now?” Ry said with a grin.
“Well okay, then. Good thing I’m dressed.”
“Chrissy called, and I said it would be okay if they came over now. She might have to leave this afternoon and she didn’t want to go without talking to you first.”
“It’s okay. I want to hear what she has to say. Did she tell you yet?”
“I knew a little about your father, but nope. I don’t know what she’s found.”
“I know you’re probably worried, but I lived with him my entire life until four months ago, and I know what he’s capable of. There isn’t much she can tell me I haven’t suspected, anyway. I’ll handle it even if I’m not happy about it. I’ve got this. You taught me that.”
Ry smiled and leaned down to kiss her when the doorbell rang again.
“I guess I need to get that.” He chuckled.
After one last look at the trees, Harmony followed him inside.
“I’m so glad you’re okay,” Chrissy said as she hugged Harmony. “I hated we had to keep you in the dark about the plan. But we didn’t even know if he’d show up.”
“It’s okay. Ry explained it all, and it was the right thing to do. Besides, no one expected him to have a gun. I should have figured, but I’ve never seen him with one.”
Ryan and Josh followed behind Chrissy. Harmony hugged each of them, giving Josh an extra squeeze. She’d gotten to know him a lot better over the last few days, and she really liked him and his potty mouth.
“Anyone want coffee, or something else?” Harmony asked as they followed Ry into the living room.
“If I have any more coffee, I will probably go supersonic,” Chrissy joked.
Josh and Ryan shook their heads.
Ry pulled two chairs over from the island for Josh and Ryan. Chrissy sat in the recliner, leaving the couch for Ry and Harmony. As she scooted next to Ry and he rested his arm along her shoulders, the anxiety that twisted her gut and set her pulse racing eased.
“Before I start, I just want to say that your father is a cocksucker and I hope he rots in jail for the rest of his life.”
“Gee, babe, don’t hold back,” Ryan said to his fiancée.
“I won’t,” she replied with a smirk. “I’m glad I still have some friends in the FBI, or I’d have had a lot harder time figuring this shit out.”
“I’m glad you do, too. And whatever you found is okay, don’t worry about telling me.”
Chrissy nodded. “Okay. I found out about your mom. Her name was Lilibeth Monroe before she married your sperm donor. She was the only child of older parents and very wealthy.”
A pang of grief squeezed Harmony’s heart when she realized Chrissy was using past tense when she referred to her mom.
“From what I could find out, they were happy for a while. The first sign of trouble happened after you turned three. That’s when your mom changed her will, leaving everything to you.”
“She did? You said her parents were wealthy, but…”
“Oh yeah, a shit ton of it. In fact, you’re a multi-millionaire.”
