“They’re about to do the garter toss.”
“So?”
“I bet Ry makes sure he catches it.”
“I don’t understand. Why would that matter?” Harmony asked.
“If he catches it, he’ll get to put it on you since you caught the bouquet.”
“Oh no. I’d forgotten about that.” Maybe he wouldn’t be the one to catch it. “He wouldn’t want to do that. He’s just being polite, hanging around making sure I don’t take myself or anyone else out.”
“Girl, no man isthatpolite. Even his dog knows.” Chrissy nodded toward where the two of them were watching her.
“It’s kind of weird, or maybe intense. I don’t need to be protected like I’m glass. I fall on my ass daily and I haven’t broken yet.”
“These guys are all Alpha males. You’re never going to convince them they don’t need to protect you. I saved Ryan’s ass, and he still watches over me like a mother hen. Have you seen how he keeps checking to see where I am? It’s how they all are.”
“I don’t know if I could handle that, no matter how attractive and nice he is. Especially after my ex had to control my every move. It’s one reason I left him in Iowa.”
“I’m not trying to scare you. Just explain.”
“Well, I’m sure it won’t matter. I’ll probably never see Ry again after today.”
“Time will tell,” Chrissy said as she pulled Meghan out of the way while the guys gathered in the center of the dance floor for the garter toss.
Sure enough, Ry was in the middle of the group, and apparently, his friends were giving him a hard time about it. Harmony only had a moment to wonder what that was about before the garter flew right into Ry’s hands.
“I told you.” Chrissy smirked.
“Ugh. Maybe he’ll give me a pass. And we can skip that part.”
“I’m sure he will if you ask him. He’d never force you to do something if you’re not comfortable,” Chrissy said.
Harmony didn’t have to worry. Ry and Whiskey headed toward where she stood with Chrissy, and there was no sign of the garter.
“Nice bouquet,” Ry said as he stopped by her side.
“It really is. I should probably head home and put them in water.”
“You can’t go yet. They’re about to cut the cake. There is no denying the cake.” Ry’s eyebrows lifted, and he looked shocked that she’d even consider skipping out on the cake.
“But it’s just cake.” Harmony wanted to escape more than she needed the extra calories that would go right to her hips.
“That’s sacrilege. There is nojust cake.”
“I suppose you agree?” Harmony asked the dog, who was sitting at her feet with his tongue hanging out.
“It’s delicious,” Chrissy added. “I helped Meghan pick it out since Rafe was away on a mission.”
Harmony shook her head and smiled. She’d arrived late. She probably shouldn’t leave before they cut the cake. At least they still had one to cut, thanks to her new canine friend. “Okay, I give up. Cake it is.”
Chrissy was right. Harmony sat with Ry and a bunch of his teammates and chatted as they ate. It was probably the best cake Harmony had ever eaten, even if she would groan when she stepped on the scale in the morning.
“What are you thinking about so hard?”
“Nothing, just cake and calories.”
“But it was so good. I’m thinking of having another slice.”
