“Hey, this is nice.”

“Do you need anything, Pavlina?”Tryphon asked.

“Anything, and I’ll try my hardest to get it for you,”Kimon said.

This is what I liked, when they all got along instead of insulting each other.

“Revenge. I need revenge.”

“Demos gets back tomorrow. Maybe he’ll have news for us.”

I knew Demos would be back, but I was hoping Demeter would pay a little visit. I had a plot up my sleeve to find out about those collars. I made it on the fly, but I hoped my bait was enough for her.

“Can we just have a moment of silence for Aello? She didn’t deserve to go like that.”

We could definitely do that. And I needed to do better by the other monsters here.

he next day, Demeter played right into my plot. Demos still wasn’t back yet, but if she looked into his cell, she would see an empty cell with him sleeping inside. I knew who she was as soon as she came storming into the jail with Hades trailing behind her.

“The jail ismydomain, Demeter. You need not be here.”

Oh, but she did. She was playing right into my hands. Good thing Tryphon got his tentacle off me before she saw.

“I’m here to meet your new dog, Hades. Why you listen to a human is beyond me. What could she possibly know about monsters?”

“Play along, y’all. I have a plan. Pretend like you are attacking me.”

“But baby bird—”

“Do it. Trust me.”

Pavlina shot a web at my head that just narrowly avoided missing me. Kimon rattled the bars of his cell with smoke blowing out his nose. Tryphon drenched me with water and splashed Demeter in the process. Good.

I hated her on sight. Sure, she was beautiful, but she was pretty in this snotty way like she looked down on everyone. Moving on to my plot.

I fell at her feet and buried my face in her high heels.

“Oh, great Goddess. Save me. Hades kidnapped me, and he expects me to look after these terrible monsters. I’m a veterinarian. I’m not qualified to look after bull men and giant spiders. Help me!”

“Ha! Not even your new dog likes you.”

Hades just cocked an eyebrow at me like he knew I was up to something.

“She’s a little rabid, but she knows what she’s doing.”

“Get to your feet, little human, and tell me why you ruined my carefully planned fight last night.”

Here goes nothing. I was ready to fling my plan into the wind and hope she didn’t put some curse on me like Medusa had put on her. I rose to my feet and grabbed her arm.

“I want to see Hephaestus. I want a weapon capable of sending Hades to the pits of Tartarus with the Titans. You can blame me, but then I want to be sent back home. I had a wonderful life before he kidnapped me,” I whispered in her ear.

Demeter got right in my face.
