“I liberated a grimoire from the Aether Circle, and they didn’t get it back when I got busted. They pulled some strings for Venus and made sure we served our time together because she was supposed to kill me. The Aether Circle wanted it done yesterday, and she was taking too long, so they contacted Faust. If it makes you feel any better, when the Aether Circle gets someone in here, it’s going to be for both of us. They don’t like failure or loose ends.”

Wren grunted.

“Faust must be insane. With the kind of money the Aether Circle was offering, I already would have killed you. I get it, though.”

“His code? I would think with the kind of money they were offering, he’d break it. He would never have had to work another day in his life.”

Wren fell out laughing, then got right up in my face.

“You don’t know, do you? You aren’t feeling it, which means you aren’t a shifter. Suddenly, you just became a million times more interesting, and I’m getting why you’re all up Dakarys and Rajack’s ass.”

I grabbed her arm.

“Shut the fuck up!” I hissed. “I don’t need that getting out.”

Wren seemed to find the entire thing hilarious. She couldn’t stop laughing.

“Does the wolf know what you are?”

“No, and if you’re supposed to be protecting me, you won’t mention I’m not a regular fox shifter around anyone here.”

“That’s rich. Faust finally finds his mate, and he’s making deals with me to protect your ass, and he doesn’t even know what the fuck you are.”

“Wait, a fucking minute here. Hold up. What are you talking about? I’m his mate? Is that why he did a total fucking one-eighty with me?”

“Well, it’s certainly why you aren’t dead, cupcake. The Aether Circle probably offered him enough money to buy his own island to retire on to make you dead.”

“What the shit am I supposed to do with that?”

Wren just shrugged.

“Get to know him and give him a chance. You’re it for him now. He’s never going to see anyone else but you.”

Well, that explained why Faust was being so kind to me, but I really didn’t want that kind of pressure. I knew all about wolves and their mates. Most of the time, it was other shifters, and they both felt it. I was starting to care for Faust, but I was feeling that way about Dakarys and Rajack too.

My dating life was a disaster. I couldn’t even commit to a television show for longer than two seasons, much less a person. What was I supposed to do with a wolf who felt some pull to me because of fate? I was definitely going to find a way to fuck that up for good.

Faust didn’t tell me because he knew I wasn’t feeling the same. He was trying his hardest to woo me, and it was working. It was just working with Dakarys and Rajack too. And what was I supposed to do when I broke out of here? Faust had a job here in more ways than one. He probably didn’t want to go on the run with me, especially not with the Aether Circle after me.

I was already fucking this up, and mate or no mate, it meant something that the alarm stopped me from telling him my secret.

I just needed to figure out what.
