“That boy ain’t right in the head,” Faust boomed. “I’m pretty sure his mama dropped him on his head when he was a pup.”

“Is there a warlock equivalent for that?”

“Yeah. He got into mommy’s special potion as a child.”

“Why is he still here, Faust?”

“Okay, so this can’t leave this office, right? Brody is the warden’s nephew. They know he’s a fuckup, but she covers for him. He can’t get a job anywhere else. He got fired from Best Buy before he got hired here.”

“Do I want to know what happened with that?”

“He got accused of stealing, but he claims it wasn’t his fault.”

“It never is. Nothing is Venus’s fault, either.”

Faust just shrugged.

“Venus is breaking all kinds of unsaid prison rules. I’d bet money she fucks a guard next. Probably Brody.”

I started laughing. Yeah, I could totally see that. Venus had become power-hungry. I wouldn’t put it past her.

“What are you doing over there while I slave away over your files?”

“Want to see?”

I got up and walked over to his desk. I peered over his shoulder. Faust always had this way of smelling totally amazing. My fox loved it. He smelled like pine, vanilla, and fresh air. He was watching the CCTV footage. There was Venus in her hospital bed, and there was the laundry room. Faust was watching the witches. I didn’t blame him.

“Anything interesting happen?”

“There’s no sound, but I don’t need it. Wren is artfully winning over the witches. I saw her at breakfast, and I could hear her. She’s using me as an excuse, and that’s totally fine. I wasn’t really thinking about how she would explain things when I moved her to your cell, but I wanted to keep both of you safe. If it were up to me, I’d move her off laundry duty.”

A light went off over my head. Wren needed to be in the mailroom if we were going to escape. Dakarys and Rajack could tell her about their plans and bring her in. Wren would forgive me, right? I’m sure she didn’t really want to be in the laundry room with those shiv wielding bitches.

“Wren could go to the mailroom,” I suggested.

Faust closed his laptop and turned to look at me with his intense amber eyes.

“What is it with you and the mailroom?”

Tell him.Everything in my body was screaming to tell him everything. I didn’t. I lied.
