Chapter 23

hat was this shit? I asked that fucking witch to protect Rei, not snuggle in bed with her. They were both passed out in Rei’s bed sleeping through the bell. I swear, if they had sex, I was going to murder Wren. I couldn’t smell it like they had, but my wolf still wanted to tear her throat out because he didn’t care it didn’t go that far. Wren knew she was my mate. She was the only inmate here that knew. She should have known better.
I grabbed her foot and dropped her on the floor. Wren was up and ready to throw a punch in seconds until she realized it was me. She threw her hands up and backed away slowly.
“Don’t do anything stupid and expose yourself. You’ll put Rei in danger and end up in jail.”
I knew she was right, but my wolf didn’t. I could see that my fingernails had lengthened into claws. I wanted to swipe my hand out and rip this fucking witch’s throat out. She knew. Wren knew she was mine. She should have fucking stayed away.
Rei jumped between us. I didn’t have to shake her awake this time. We were all trying to keep this quiet so the other foxes didn’t hear.
“Faust, stop,” Rei whispered. “If anyone finds out, they’ll transfer you to another prison to keep you away from me. I don’t want that. I don’t want to lose you, and it’s more than just the protection you offer. Please, don’t ruin this by being jealous.”
I was so confused, and my wolf didn’t know what to do. Rei all but admitted she was starting to care for me, which is what I wanted. But she wanted the witch too, and wolves didn’t share. I didn’t even have some sort of kinky fantasy of having a threesome with the two of them. I didn’t want Wren anywhere near her when it came to sex.
“Get out to the front for count. And need I remind both of you there’s no touching in prison. Sleep in your own fucking beds.”
I stomped out and resumed my count. I was furious, and it wasn’t at Rei. I probably should be angry with her. She could have kicked Wren out of her bed. No, I focused all my anger on that fucking witch. I didn’t move her in here to seduce my mate, and I thought we had a mutual understanding. She protected Rei, and I helped her get revenge.
At no point during that were feelings supposed to get involved.
I was stewing as I stood guard outside the showers and then followed them to the mess hall. I wanted to sit with Rei and her friends to stake my claim, so the sphinx and gargoyle knew she was fucking off-limits since it didn’t seem to sink in with Rei, but I knew better.
Rei was right. If anyone in prison found out, they’d kill her. If any of the staff found out, I’d be transferred to a different prison because they would think the temptation to mark her was too great. I couldn’t do a fucking thing.
I stalked over to watch the witches. Wren was supposed to be dealing with them, but that bitch had lost any trust I had in her. She took her tray to the witches and sat down. What had I done wrong that Rei even saw her over me?
I could sometimes hear the witches from where I perched on the wall, but if they wanted to whisper, my wolf hearing had trouble making it out over the noise in the mess hall. Today was different. It was like they didn’t care who heard them.
One of them blurted out they fucked Brody loud enough for all the tables near them to see. What the actual fuck? I knew Brody had a fetish. He was always bragging about how he was going to fuck an inmate one day. No one was dumb enough to take him up on it. He reeked of desperation. I had a feeling he was one of those warlocks that thought he was in love and started stalking women after a pity fuck.
Oh, holy shit. Fucking a guard was a death sentence. Everyone knew that. Every single table around the witches had gone silent and was staring. Wren met my eye and winked at me before joining the conversation again.
What the fuck did she do, and how did she manage it with her handcuffs?
“We’ll keep fucking him. We’ll get a black market up and running, and then we’ll just kill Dakarys and Rajack, so everyone has to go through us. Brody will sneak things in for us if we keep fucking him.”
Oh, fuck. They didn’t just say it loud enough for people to hear that not only had they fucked him once, but they were going back for seconds. And now I knew why the sphinx and gargoyle had so much respect in here. It explained the contraband we found.
That made me feel a little better. They had to be using the mailroom, and Rei wasn’t near that. If they went down, they wouldn’t take Rei with them. She was probably only hanging out with them because they could get her things. She wasn’t developing feelings for them. I only needed to worry about Wren.
But shit. Whatever Wren had done, the witches were all freely discussing their plots just to put a target on their backs. The witches might not realize it, but the rest of the prison did because I could see the looks on their faces.
The sphinx and the gargoyle had a method of sneaking things in that didn’t involve a guard. That much was smart. There was only one way for a guard to smuggle in contraband, and I doubted Brody was shoving anything up his ass. Some things we found in the cells wouldn’t even fit up there.
How had every single witch in here gone stupid? Even if Wren somehow managed to do this, I still counted her in on the stupidity since she was making moves on my mate. The people listening to them knew just as much as I did Brody would not be able to get the same contraband, and he would get caught with the little he could sneak in.
“We need to figure out who we’re going to pin the murders of Dakarys and Rajack on. Everyone still blames the eagles for Astrid, which is what we wanted. Venus is still learning all the people in here and deciding who she doesn’t like. Rei is dying for sure, and we need to figure out who is going down for that too.”
Oh, my goddess. What had Wren done? They were all leaning in like they were trying to whisper, buteveryoneheard. This would not end well for the witches. I saw two vampires walked over to the eagles to let them know they had been framed.
The different gangs sitting nearby who had overheard were sending messengers to their allies who hadn’t. This was going to be a shit show. There was going to be a riot in the mess hall.
I pulled my walkie off my shoulder.
