“Then what’s your fucking problem? If you need a big family, you’ve got one. If you want love, Rei will get there with you as long as you don’t blow it over fucking Faust.”

“I like the idea of you, and I’m okay with Wren. I get I don’t know Faust at all, but I hate the idea. I think it’s less that he’s a killer and more that he’s a guard here. He’s responsible for keeping us locked up. If he knows Rei is his mate, why hasn’t he gotten her out himself?”

So, that was the crux of it. I knew we would eventually get there if I kept him talking. Sometimes, Dakarys liked to think other things were the problem when they weren’t.

“Because he’s not stupid? If Rei broke out and Faust disappeared, everyone would know it was him. They’d both be hunted. Faust probably thinks there are enough people after Rei right now. Right now, she’s where he can watch her and keep her safe from the Aether Circle. We’re going to need a plan for them once we’re out.”

“I still think we need to find a demon, at least. They can tell us why Rei isn’t in Hell with her people. If it’s safe for her to go back, maybe we could all go there.”

The idea was certainly appealing. I didn’t just read up on demon lore. Hell went by many names throughout history. Most of the things passed down about it were likely written by people who had never been there. Some people believed it was this fiery place of eternal torment. I knew that much wasn’t true. I’d been in prison in Hell for a long time, and it was freezing cold.

That wasn’t in any of the lore I’d read, which led me to believe demons kept that a big secret just like everything else. Why they allowed a prison there was beyond me. That wasn’t in any of the news stories that broke, just that Hell was taking over now and making it a decent place for a prison.

“It’s risky, and we shouldn’t do it unless Rei wants us to,” I said.

“Well, we don’t have any other plan to keep her safe from the Aether Circle.”

It needed to be said. Dakarys wasn’t thinking clearly. Maybe this would settle the matter for good.

“That’s exactly why we need someone like Faust on our side. He’s got connections and skills we don’t. Wren wouldn’t have them because she’s been in here too long. WeneedFaust to keep Rei safe.”

Dakarys finally settled his shit down and flopped on his cot. Finally!

“I get it. I still don’t think I’ll ever be friends with him, but I get why we need him.”

It was a start.
