Chapter 5

hey finally brought us some fucking food. It was just a stale baloney sandwich and an apple, but I was starving. I was one of those people that bored ate, or nervous ate, and this counted for both. Wren said not to put her bed back together because they were sure to be back tossing cells again. For now, she was hogging my bed, and they hadn’t come to our cellblock to throw my mattress on the floor again.

There was finally another alarm. I snapped to attention.

“What the fuck was that?”

“You’re so adorable with your first prison murder,” Wren said. “It means they found weapons. Someone is going down, just not who is supposed to.”

“Oi, witch. I’m taking it you know who did this,” Whisper called.

“Yeah. The same bitch you put in medical. She’s coming for your fox friend next.”

“Fucking witch drama. Don’t you dare bring it here.”

“Your little fox friend did that.”

I had to trust my gut. Venus had all the witches on her side. Whisper and the foxes helped me once. They needed to know the truth because they might be in danger.

“Venus took a contract from the Aether Circle to kill me. I have a feeling she goaded you into beating her so she could carry out this hit while she was in medical so it wouldn’t tie back to her.”

Wren nudged me with her shoulder.

“I’ll bet you’re regretting liberating anything from the Aether Circle now.”

Okay, yeah. I regretted a little. Astrid died when she didn’t have to. I’d have to carry that with me for the rest of my life. Whisper just snorted.

“That’s such a fancy word for stealing their shit.”

“Rei did the world a favor stealing that grimoire,” Wren grunted. “Venus is doing way more than the Aether Circle asked her to do. She’ll die for that. Either by my hand or someone they get in here.”

“We want to help,” Whisper said. “I know Rei has a big secret she doesn’t want the rest of the prison to know. We’ll keep your secret, Rei.”

“Hold up a minute. You all know? Why didn’t you say anything?” I demanded.

The foxes all started doing that eerie laugh only foxes could do. Candra was Whisper’s cellmate. Candra straight up acted like she thought I was like her in the showers. What the fuck? Candra was just sitting there giggling.

“Honey, I wasn’t lying about your tits, but you don’t smell like any fox in the entire world. Stay away from the other shifters because they aren’t as understanding as us foxes.”

“I think we all have a million questions about how you left fox hair behind, but you don’t smell like a fox. It’s illegal to keep them as pets,” Wren said.

“Perky tits doesn’t smell like anything I’ve met before,” Whisper said.

Wren smacked me on the back.

“Well, no one can agree with what you are, but the consensus is that you have a nice rack. I wouldn’t mind getting a peek.”

“Why are you all so interested in my tits? This isn’t a women’s only prison.”

“Unfortunately,” Wren grunted. “There’s way too much sausage in here for my liking.”

“Some of us like both,” Whisper said.

“At the same time,” Candra said.
