We were pretty far away, but I felt the ground shudder underneath me as the ammunition factory exploded. Dice was right. That was the sexiest bomb I’d ever seen go off.
Chapter 21
T
here wasn’t this immense need to hide me anymore. Every single Bubba in D.C was looking for me, and not just because Isaiah wanted them to. They all knew I was at that ammunition factory, and now it was destroyed, and their men were dead. I’m sure they gave the Horsemen all the credit for the carnage, but some of those dead bodies were all me damnit!
I finally got to see more of the resistance than just the inside of a motel room. There sure werea lotof people here that hated what my father stood for. And it was more than just a handful of them riding out the apocalypse in a ratty motel.
The motel wasn’t huge, but it was isolated and surrounded by mountains. There were way more people in the parking lot than there were rooms here. We appeared where we couldn’t be seen and walked up to the motel.
There were so many people out here, and it gave me hope. Clearly not everyone drank the Antichrist Kool-Aid. There were good people here plotting how to overthrow him.
“Wow, look at them!”
“There’s more,” Asher said. “There’s a park in these mountains near the hotel. The bathrooms are still functional as long as you don’t drink the water. The hotel rooms rotate mostly, but there were a few contractors and construction people that survived. They built tiny houses in the park. They don’t have power, but it’s a roof over their heads, and far enough away from the Bubbas.”
“How many of them are there?” I asked.
“We are legion, for we are many,” Aeron said.
“What movie is that from?”
All the Horsemen started laughing at me, and I didn’t know why. That soundedexactlylike one of Aeron’s action movie quotes. It sounded familiar, and there were things I didn’t remember. Maybe if they told me what movie it was from, it would trigger a memory.
“That’s from the Bible!” Asher wheezed. “It’s what demons always say when you are trying to kick them out of a human.”
“Though, technically, it has been used in several horror movies,” Aeron said.
I smacked Aeron on the back of the head.
“Youare notallowed to switch things up and quote the Bible instead of movies. Where did you stash everything from the warehouses?”
“In our bat cave in the mountain,” Dice said. “It’s where I build things that go boom.”
“Dice and I can make a chloroform bomb in there,” Leif said.
Dice grinned.
“Just like old times, eh?”
“Can I say kudos to Speedy for blackmailing the info out of that Bubba instead of killing him?” Leif said. “I wonder what he thinks is going to happen at the trials.”
“Nothing. He still thinks he’s right, and he’ll be found not guilty.”
Just then, we all heard a shriek, and Pepper came storming in from the side of the motel. She took one look at Asher and came stomping over. She had about as much luck as I did when she tried to shove him.
“Did you come here to pick up those Marthas you imposed on us? They are definitely wearing out their welcome.”
“Not yet, but soon. Is Mae still shooting her mouth off?”
“I don’t know what their names are! They are still insisting they are Marthas. They demand to be waited on hand and foot, and they constantly complain about their lodgings. The Witch insults anything we give her to eat and insists she can do better. She should just be grateful she’s getting hot food! She fed my people stale crackers and water when she held them hostage. Oh, and when she’s not complaining about the food, she’s getting all sanctimonious because we used to be strippers. The only reason they aren’t dead is because of what you are. We aren’t fucking with that.”
“Just a little longer, Pepper. We’ve got everything we need to make our next move. We can do this without endangering anyone here. We’ve got guns and ammo we stole from the Bubbas to give you. They’ll be knocked out. We’ll need your boys at the prison to turn it back into a jail to hold these fuckers. They can still run it and be the guards, but once we do this, the apocalypse is over. They’ll need to find another place to live then,” Asher said.
“You’re really going to kick them out of their homes and make them babysit these shit for brains?”
