Aeron winked at me.
“Demon blood does it for you like Bubba guts, right?”
“I’m officially never reading a kinky demon book ever again. Thanks, Apocalypse.”
Chapter 30

ow that I wasn’t concentrating on everything inside the room, I could pay attention to what was going on outside. I could hear shouting. I peered out the window, and a mob was gathering on the lawn. They had guns, torches, and someone had made a noose. Was that for little ol’ me?
“Shit,” Leif said, mopping his face. “The demons didn’t get all the Bubbas. Some of them made it out and told them that there were demons.”
“They already think Speedy is possessed. They’re going to blame her,” Dice groaned.
“Is the resistance still waiting for our signal?” Aeron asked.
“Yeah, they are well hidden,” Asher said. “Leif, take Ariel just outside where they are hidden. We’ll handle it from here.”
“What are you going to do?” I demanded.
Leif grabbed me and wrapped his arms around me.
“There’s no time!”
I could hear men in the hall calling for my blood just as Leif got me out of there. I got why I was zapped out, but I was still a little mad about it. Not at the Horsemen, but about the whole situation. Sure, blame the pink-haired tattooed woman for the demons! That wasn’t even my fault.
Leif took me all the way back to the Washington Monument.
“What the fuck, Leif? I thought you were taking me to the resistance?”
“There’s food, audio, and visual here. It’s going to be forever before I can take you to a real movie. This can be ourapocalypse date.”
“Leif, those people are riled up and wanting to hang me. People are going to die!”
Leif just shrugged. He grabbed a bag of tortilla chips and salsa from ourCostcohaul. He was glaring at it pretty hard as he opened both.
“This isn’t evencloseto being as soon as Maria’s, but it’ll do. Come snuggle with me, Speedy. It’s almost over.”
“Leif!” I shrieked, stamping my foot.
It wasn’t over. Men with guns had just stormed the White House. They were going to find a burned demonic symbol in the carpet, melted black candles, black ash everywhere, and their savior on the floor with his skull caved in. Most of that wasn’t my doing, but I did take out my rage from years of shitty parenting on his skull with my baby blue baseball bat.
“Shh,” Leif said, yanking me down to him. “My brothers got out of there when we did. Dice is probably going to fuck with them.”
He fiddled with a knob on one of Dice’s devices, and I could hear everything. People were shouting about demons and burning me alive.
“It was demons!” a man said. “You should see the inside. They turned our men to blackened corpses. The Oval Office has demonic shit everywhere. It looks like that bitch called for help. The savior must have banished the demons and sent her back to Hell in his dying breath. He’s dead!”
The cries of anguish over that total garbage human's death were pretty telling. They really believed he was going to save them from all this.
“How do we know that bitch is back in Hell? She could be back with her terrorist friends, and they could come for us next. What if they aren’t even terrorists? What if they have demons in them just like her?”
“Well, I say we go hunting and kill anyone who isn’t like us!”
“I can help,” Dice said.
I grabbed a chip and scooped some salsa. This was a pretty good apocalypse movie, considering they thought I was the villain. I snuggled into Leif.
