“I think that’s your singular penis talking, Taron. It seems to speak for you sometimes. You would have gotten your ass beat all over the ocean for that stunt with the fork, and Forrest didn’t hurt you at all.”

“No, I wouldn’t. They don’t expect us to eat with complicated devices in the ocean. If Forrest grew a tail and brought that stupid fork to the ocean, he’d get eaten by something much bigger than him in minutes. And don’t go picturing him with a tail! I don’t like it.”

Too late. Forrest would make a seriously sexy merman. All the mermaids would fight over him because he wasn’t a massive jerk like all the pretty mermen.

“See?” Forrest said. “They keep doing that. They have a way to talk that we can’t hear. I asked Kishi, and it’s not possible with us. So it’s entirely possible they’ve been spelled.”

“Maybe,” Callum said, scratching his chin. “Or maybe they really can’t speak the way we do because they talk in other ways.”

“So, we ask her. I understand women way better than you and Beck do. She still has other ways of communicating, and I’m not going to pretend to speak for her.”

“Shut up, Forrest. Neither of us does that. I was making my point, and then I was going to ask her.”

“Well, then we can agree we both respect women better than Beck.”

“Beck likes women a little too much and, by all accounts, spoils them rotten. This isn’t a pissing contest. Kishi, has someone spelled you and Taron to lose your voices?”

I nodded my head. I was already lying to them about a lot. Maybe I could have told them exactly what their father did to my sister and Taron’s family and still have their help and protection. But I couldn’t risk it.

I was still starting to feel bad about all the lies I was telling these brothers.
