“I created this from a rock in my garden. As long as she’s wearing it, it will hide her aura to look more like a witch’s. People will always sense she’s powerful, but they won’t guess the truth. Also, it will keep people from bothering her.”
“You expect me to lie that my daughter is not like me?” Reyson boomed.
“Kids are cruel, Reyson. What do you think will happen if they find out they are going to school with a little god? They are going to want to establish dominance. They will dog pile on her, and she’ll never get a break.”
“She’ll be perfectly capable of kicking their asses. She’s not going to have to wait to come into her powers like they are.”
I got where Reyson was coming from. I didn’t want any of my kids to deny who they were, but Reyson had never been to school with other kids. She would be damned if she did and damned if she didn’t. Those kids would want to be top dogs by fighting the strongest person in the school. If she revealed she had magic, they wouldn’t react well. Everyone knew witches didn’t get their powers early unless something terrible happened to them.
“Reyson, just for school. Let her pretend to be a witch around other kids. It’ll allow her to have a normal childhood. When she’s at home, teach her what she inherited from you because I can’t.”
“We’ll do it that way until she’s old enough toaskwhat she wants. I also plan on reaching out to my siblings I’m friends with. We are going to spread the word. If you come for my daughter, you are coming for all of us. The twins are going to have a perfect, lovely life. I’m going to make sure of it.”
“If anyone tries to come at Matilda for being a Hellhound, if I don’t eat them, she will,” Bram said. “She’ll start shifting when she’s a toddler.
“Mags will be there to help,” Lilith said. “You don’talwaysneed to kill anyone who comes at them.”
I didn’t want to worry about bullies or angry gods. The twins were snuggled into my chest with their arms over Mags. Their hands were touching. I had a feeling they would be just as close as Ravyn and I. They didn’t stop crying until they were close to each other again.
They were just so precious. Michael was a year old. Some of the feathers on his wings had started to come in, and we hadn’t had a single angel show up at the library. Reyson said our life would be full of happiness and babies after we did our thing in Hell.
I knew that extended to my children too. I’d put the crystal around Tempest’s neck until she could tell us what she wanted for herself, but I knew my children and any future children I might have were going to have totally happy lives.
If someone threatened that, Reyson could just make them explode into a cloud of pink glitter.
